Anyone have any experience with the race ecm offered by buell a while back? It came as a kit as I understand, like with a race exhaust and air filter. Would it work with an 06 Uly? How does this one compare to the Erik Buell Racing race ecm?
Someone is trying to sell one online and I'm toying with the idea. Thanks.

I've had both on my '06.

The P&A one, that was originally sold with the muffler, does NOT have control for the muffler valve. If you run a non-valved muffler...it's OK.

My '06 now runs a stock muffler, with valve. I sent Erik Buell Racing my P&A ECM and had them reflash it. Better mapping, better idle, better power, same or better fuel economy, muffler valve control...best money I've spent.

Email tech@ebracing.com, ask them "if I buy an old P&A "Race" ECM, how much to reflash it?" and tell them if you do/don't want muffler control and any mods you have to the engine. I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised by their answer.

Y'see...someone up there owns a Ulysses with DDFI-II.

Let's just say...I'm willing to bet there's been some research done into getting good maps for it ; )

Yeah...the old race programming was "OK"...but when I wanted to go back to a stock muffler I had Erik Buell Racing reflash it. My request was "stock muffler, rideability, longevity, and if it doesn't negate any of the above...fuel economy", with an all-stock engine, stock muffler, and K&N.

WOW.

Night. And. Day.

Seriously, just an amazing program.

I have an '09 XB12XT and just put on the Erik Buell Racing ECM for stock exhaust. Also added a K&N air filter and changed plugs to Iridium plugs. The new ECM smoothed out the throttle response, made the bike peppier feeling and seems to be a great addition. Starts easier and idles better.

For the 'while back' version, I put one on the City-X I had back in '05. It gave it a couple hundred more RPMs and more top end power along with about 7 more MPH. The best thing was the sound. IMHO the best sounding modified exhaust on any Buell.

It came with the muffler, ECM, K&N filter, and all that was needed after installation was a TPS reset. It ran great, but made cold starts uncomfortable for the plugs. I never went anywhere without spare plugs and tools for it, with that set up.

I think it cost around $950 when all of this stuff was new to the market. And the City-X was a 9, so it did not have the exhaust valve of the 12.

Vern - none of the XB race exhausts have the valve. Its only the OEM XB12 exhausts that have a valve. The only difference between the 9 and 12 race kits was the computer : )

Well crap. I did not know that. I assumed the 12 race muffler had the valve. If I had known I would have taken the one off the City-X before it went away!

Nope. No valve. That's why the old "race" ECM didn't have valve control.

I found that the valve is not a "ex-up" like the Yams but more to control noise in town.

While my bike was still stock I wired up the valve to full open, which is the short route through the can, which gave a better sound with no running problems. Its a waste of weight - dump it. Here is a pic of the insides of the can.

OEM CAN

There is a trick, which applies to all XBs, and that is to make sure the bike is running smooth before you do any mods.
Some people spend big money trying to fix a problem but do not do the basics first.

An open air box with a K&N and something like a Remus can will run fine, mine does, with a std ECU map. But for better low/mid rev range power you will need either a fuel device or a re-map. Either/or is worth the time/money.

All mods, even none, work much better using a higher grade fuel. Like EU 97RON over 95RON.

One of the things I love about this bike is that I can choose either power, pay more, or good fuel use, pay less. Something that is not always the case with some bikes.

pontlee77 - With all due respect to you I do not think a loud pipe is enough.

Rider skill, observation, an escape route and plain old style want to live should be enough.

I have 06, the old race ecm, and Remus - and it works perfect. Can't compare to new EB Race like Ratbuell...but then I cannot ride like him either!

If only because as our bikes age (like us) having another ECM is a good thing from my point of view.

Nipsey, you're sayin you would recommend this ECM? Did it improve things over the stock ECM? Thanks for the info.

I bought the bike with the race ECM, 07 airbox and Remus so I cannot compare it to stock. But I can recommend this setup as the bike runs flawlessly - pulls like a goosed mule from just over 2k , no stumble or any other nonsense you read about folks fighting, and gets low 50's mpg when chasing Vern around the mountains a couple of years back(48 mpg on a loop around Lake Superior last year).

The old race ECM is good...and it cures some of the sneezy-snort problems the OEM computer had.

The Erik Buell Racing ECM? Flawless. No other way to say it.

Hint: if you already have an old race ECM, stamped "for race use only"...email tech@ebracing.com and see how much it'll cost to have them reflash it if you send it to them.

And Uly_man - the stock pipe IS a tuning aid, not just a noise issue. Long pipes make torque, which is needed and desired at low RPM and at low throttle openings. Short pipes lose torque, but flow better at high RPM for power. THAT is why Buell put the InterActive exhaust on the XB12.

I opened the valve on my Uly for a while...and it ran like poop. My bike now, with Erik Buell Racing computer and stock muffler (and working valve) runs better than it ever did with the old race ECM and the Drummer.

Ratbuell - Thats fair enough but just my opinion since I found it of no advantage.

I also understand some of the science of this issue and have cut/built systems on cars and bikes many times in the past.

All I will say is that these systems are VERY complicated and some of the none OEM systems results are subjective to say the least. If what you have works then thats great. The problem is when people try to make a direct "bike to bike" comparison over the net. Even something as simple as the viscosity of the engine oil, on an engine with oil lifters, can effect performance to some extent.

Question regarding the Erik Buell Racing race ecm: the website states you can't reprogram it with anything other than their software. Fair enough. But how about doing TPS resets? What's required? Will ECM spy work?

Yes you can use ECMspy to do a TPS reset. They require you to purchase the Erik Buell Racing tuning software if you plan on mucking around with things. If you use ECMspy to modify it, and things go wrong, tough luck. They would be able to tell if you did modify it.

Erik Buell Racing Cost for reflash of old Race ECM is $75. The firmware update is included in this figure.

My current set up is Race ECM and Race Muffler and it runs great, but I I have the original ECM sitting around and wondered if I could get it flashed and try it out

I have The Erik Buell Racing ECM on my 06 . I have a miss at 2900 to 3000 rpm .If i put the stock ecm in i do not have this miss.It is a very bad spot in the rpm it seem i am alway running there.
Has any one had this problem ?
If i can get this fixed i would be happy with the ecm but it suck to ride like this .

they will not flash a stock ECM- only the P&A ECMs that have "RACE USE ONLY" stamped on them. They would potentially be in some big trouble with the EPA if they messed with stockers...

DJZ - sounds like your TPS reset needs to be done. Or re-done. Mine was a little hiccup-y when I first installed it because my idiot mechanic (yours truly) botched the reset. Also, do an AFV reset and let the bike re-learn.
