Fairly new to the Buell world, <1yr and just curious about the Uly engine. From what I understand, the Uly motor more or less comes from the 1200 Harley Sportster. My question is what is the big difference between the Sportster and Buell motors and are parts interchangeable?

If memory serves me I think there are only 3 or 4 parts that inner change between the two. Someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong.

Something like that. It shares the Sportster's DNA (same basic layout, 45 degree V-twin, air cooling, same cam/valve train arrangement) but little else.

The engines used in the tube frame Buells had more parts in common with Sportsters.

Other than the starter motor and a few gaskets, not much is interchangable. There are a few other parts depending on which years you are talking about, but it still isn't much. They both come from the same lineage, but other than the bloodline they really don't have much in common. In fact, I would call the Sportster 1200 the retarded older brother.

Hey Eric with a C* : )

This a great place to be if new to the Buell world. I'm still newish at only 1.5 yrs, and this place has been priceless in terms of knowledge and support.

The 08 Uly motors (The XB12 series) have 103 stock horse power. 08 XL sportster's have 65, the 08 XR has 90. Buell motors are stronger and tougher.
