I've grown tired of the Garmin cig adapter creeping back out of the aux/accessory power port because of engine vibes and want to hardwire my Nuvi using one of these, or something similar: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Hardwire-Cable-Mini-U SB-connector/dp/B001M09L20 Anyone had issues with a specific brand or type of cable that either didn't hold up or was too big to be crammed behind the fly screen? | ||

I used the Gilsson. It's small and compact. It worked just fine, until I squashed the usb lead, then shorted it out. The built in fused worked as it should. I had taken off my gps and forgotten to secure the usb lead. It flopped around and somehow got caught in the steering head. It got squashed and bent the tiny leads inside. I tried to straighten them while the unit was still hard wired. Made contact with a couple and shorted it out. | ||

That was one of the ones I came across and was nearly ready to pull the trigger on it until I read a few mixed reviews on the quality of the fuse housing. Despite that, I'm leaning towards the Gilsson because of its smaller size. | ||

I ran mine from the battery, up under the airbox cover. Running it under the fly screen with ignition on to power it would work fine I believe. It is a small unit, and the wires seem really small on all the hard wire kits. If your worried about the housing wrap it in a little foam if it makes you feel better. If you ever decide to put in HID lighting, you'll be glad for the Gilsson's smaller size. HID have a ballast that take up space, and most people put them under the fly screen. | ||

I normally keep 5 or 6 velcro strips (hooks on one side, loops on the other, each about 6" long) tucked away in my top bag. Handiest things to have around. When I'm using my GPS, I just run 3 or 4 of them end-to-end in a loop around my top left Palmer windscreen bracket knob and the GPS power adapter. Keeps it in place just fine, and won't break like all too many rubber bands did. I know, I know - I'm almost too cheap for words. | ||

Hey, I like cheap! I am cheap. I'll spend where I need to, and save where I can. Rather have money for good parts and necessary gear than have what looks the best and cost a fortune. | ||

I have a setup a bit like Bttr. Garmin mounted to a RAM ball on the end of a U-joint handlebar mount. Stock X (or XT) handlebar. Works on either one... 3" RAM extension is just long enough to hold the Garmin above the cross brace, so I velcro strap around the handlebar and extension. No more rattles! Another velcro around the crossbrace and the bunched up stock power cord. Takes the weight of the cord away form the cigar lighter, and it does not seem to vibrate out at all. $0.02 | ||

I used a pair of cablestraps to secure my cig adapter (under the seat) works a treat, and very cheap. |
