Uly_dude, I have no interest in using the spring as I just don't have that much faith in it. I have been running these set-ups for many thousands of miles with zero problems. The swingarm protector is fashioned out of a plastic kitchen cutting board. I have used Derlin on some of my others and it lasts longer. If you feel in the inside of the swingarm you can find two thick parts. I drilled them through and tapped it 1/4-20 and just bolted it up. if you through drill it without tapping it it will be a MAJOR pita to bolt it up. Trust me. On the underside of the swingarm where the chain might hit it I roughed it up and put some Devcon aluminium epoxy on as a chain rub. Rotorhead, I'm not sure whose sprocket it is. Check out "Zippers Performance" I may have gotten it from them. All of this work could have been done a lot neater and cleaner but I just don't care to be bothered with all that. I will take some pics of my Mulysses chain set up and post them as that bike has the swingarm that all of you Uly doods have. |

Nptuly, It was a little more involved than that. I discarded the male threaded Heim-joint that comes with the FS tensioner. I replaced it with a 5/16-24 stainless steel female threaded heim-joint. I bought a length of stainless threaded rod 5/16-24 and put it into the heim with red locktite. The rest was just SS nylock nuts and washers. The hole I drilled in the tail was slotted ever so slightly with a file so that it would not bind on the threaded rod no matter what position the tensioner is in. On the other end I just took the bushings out of the belt tensioners pulley and pressed them into a sprocket. I used the fine threaded rod as it is easier to finely adjust and it holds better as well. |

Oh yeah, I almost forgot I use a 530 chain. That is why I put the Devcon aluminum epoxy on the underside of the swingarm. With a 520 chain it has a lot more clearance. I use the 530 because it makes up for my feelings of inadequacy. Oh yeah I also use the 530 because the sprockets last way way way way way way way way longer than the 520's as they are about twice as thick. This thickness on the toofs is absolutely necessary if you want your sprockets to last more than a week or two. I also have an automatic chain oiler that virtually eliminates all wear. Thanks for all the info. Can you get that tensioner in the US or did you order it from the UK? I would love to see some pictures of it on your Uly. |

Nptuly, I'm working on the pic's. as for the tensioner, I bought it from Trojan in the UK. They aren't that costly and the mods aren't either. Well worth the time and effort IMO. I have 7 XB's and they all have chain drives on them. I have been slowly putting "real chain drives" on them. Even with the adjuster that I have constructed there is still not as much adjustment as a moveable axle. |

Someone really needs to make a chain kit(sprockets, chain, shims, Skinstains adjuster, swingarm guard, etc) and sell it. I've mentioned this to Al, says he's thinking about it. Or at least a neat, concise list of what a guy needs if he were to construct a chain kit himself. I'm not ready to throw one on yet, but maybe someday. This is all good info to have at hand. 7 XBs with chains on them? Wow, you da man Stain Master! |

I have made up a list of all the parts required to do the conversion and I gave it to someone around here. I was thinking of actually getting all the parts and modifying the "Free Spirits" piece and offering to folks here for cost plus maybe a couple of bucks for my time used in making the kit. It turns out however that I am way too lazy to make it happen. I will however go through all of my old paperwork and get the list of parts I used and post it here. I might even offer to do the modificatin of the "Free Spirits" piece for any that don't have the confidance or ability to do it themselves. If we actually get a count of how many want to do it and get a little bit organized we can probably get a bulk price on the "Free Spirits" tensioners. Let's see what happens. I'll start by taking some pics of my Uly set up and posting them here. Better yet before that how about a head count of the interested parties before I get too involved in something that people think is neat but don't really have an interest in actually doing to their bike. Thanks wolfman. I've page marked that one. Skinstains, I'm not quite ready to do a chain conversion yet on my 06. In fact I just bought a free spirits for my new belt. So my answer is, I'd like one of those custom tensioners of yours, but just not yet. It does look like a great idea and appreciate you trying to put something together for the general good of the crowd. That's all you can do. |

No sweat, as long as somebody will use the info I'll post it up. I didn't get pics tonight as when I got out to the garage someone called me and asked me if I had an extra set up that they could have. I spent a couple of hours looking for one but couldn't find anything buy a few sprockets. I really need a bigger garage. So now I'm going to start a thread on the QB "what's in your garage"... |

I put the 51 tooth rear sprocket on last night. It helped a lot. It brought the idler sprocket way down so the chain is not right next to the swing arm, and now I have a little room for adjustment. I think Skinstains modified free sports tensioner is the way to go though cause it would be much easier to fine tune the slack of the chain. Time to go out and ride it and see if the wobble feeling is gone. |

You need to have a moveable idler (adjuster) to comensate for chain stretch and the load the bike is carrying. Slotting the stock idler mount won't do for long if at all. I've seen and tried other methods/products and so far the modified Free-Spirits tensioner seems to be the way to go. Unless of course you want to drop 2G's for the Erik Buell Racing unit that somes without sprockets and chain. |

Here are some pics of the Uly with the 530 O-ring chain drive on it. I just took a bunch and will load as many of them as I can before Spider gets here cause when he gets here we're off to the IMS.

Well thats all of them. The part of this set up that actually bolts to the engine case is home made. It is not because the stock one failed, it is because I lost the effin' thing. So instead of buying a whole new free Spirits tensioner I got a piece of 7075 and copied the one on my 12R. |

Look closely and you will see the chain rub is two pieces. The one that goes on the swingarm itself, and the piece that bolts on the engine case through the swingarm pivot bolt. You can still use the front chainguard with two bolts instead of the three it's supposed to have with no problems. |

Someone did. A member was a sponsor here, he offered the chain conversion kits for a while but due to some idiots on here he stopped doing it. |

Wolf, I'm silly like that, yeah, yeah, I don't know who the Frogman is refering to ? Do I ? Itile, Man I really suck don't I ? That's a ruff pic. I really blew that one didn't I ? As I posted earlier, I have two of these set-ups on two different bikes with better than 30,000 miles on each of them with no issues at all. No wheel bearing issues either. Hell yeah Wolf, it's from a movie she starred in, "Reform School Girls" or something like that. I don't usually drift towards blonds but I would've loved to try to wear that freaky junkie out. The only way to improve upon Punk is to somehow have a chippy involved. A dirty filthy real one, not some stupid hair band model chick. |

The chain conversion looks like a sweet mod, but I would have to ask myself; are the benefits really worth all the added maintenance, oil splatter, and potentially more frequent replacements? I have an 09 with 25K. My belt is original and it's in pristine condition. I ride hard in the twisties and do a lot of highway miles. My off-road riding is limited to dirt roads and I don't do a lot of burnouts and wheelies. I really can't see (yet) why I would want to make this conversion. So my question to those of you who want to go through this trouble is, why? |

I ride a lot of dirt/gravel/fire roads/forest service roads a long way from anywhere. My original belt, while still in one piece, had a small stone pressed in between the teeth. It wouldn't have made it much further than the 15k I put on it and I'm a bit nervous about using it as a spare. An extra chain is a lot cheaper and more easily repaired. Oil splatter prevents rust on the muffler and the chain oiler set up Skins has works. With the chain oil and what I spill during oil changes, my muffler should outlast the bike. I don't do burn outs or wheelies. Where I ride a lot of the time has no cell service to call for a tow either. I guess if a chain is good enough for an f800gs, XR650, DR650 and on and on...it's OK for the Uly if properly done. Plus, if I don't like it, I can always put the belt system back on. YMMV |
