My fuel gauge light comes on prematurely sometimes when I ride. It may come on after only 20-30 miles, then go off after a few miles, then it may come on again another 50 or so miles, then go off. I always reset my odometer, so I know when I really need fuel, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem and if there was a fix. Thanks. | ||

mine kinda did the same thing. It was the low fuel sensor. a 10 dollar part + or - but you need to take the fuell pump out to fix it...  | ||

I have the same problem, what is the degree of difficulty to remove the fuel pump? what is the danger of not repairing this (shorting in the fuel tank?) I have been ignoring the fuel light for the last few months. | ||

The 06's were prone to chaffing the wires on the fuel pump, I wonder if this is related.
Worst case scenario, fuel pump dies, then you are walking.
There is a guide in the FAQ section. It isn't that hard to do assuming you are mechanically inclined. | ||

Mind did the same until I fixed it. All four of the wires in there were worn through to the pump bracket. I simply cut the ends off, covered the wires with heat shrink, rerouted them, and put new ends back on. I recommend a nearly empty tank when starting on this job. And because you won't want to go back there often get a filter, pickup screen and a couple of extra "O" rings for the housing(it fits tightly, and they tear easily). Grease on the "O" rings is a good idea upon reinsertion. | ||

I'll get a new sensor, filter, pickup screen and some "o" rings to make the repairs at some point in the next couple months. I have an '06 with 21k miles. Thanks | ||

Do it SOON. My 06 low fuel light started coming on prematurely then stayed on constantly then quit when the other wires in the bundle shorted to the bracket on the pump (exactly like Etennuly's description). Seriously, I wouldn't wait months. Hours maybe........ | ||

Froggy, where is the FAQ you are referring to? I don't see it here or in the KV. My low fuel light has been coming on lately and I've been ignoring it, but the post about the fuel pump dying has me concerned. Maybe I should fix it. Much thanks. | ||

Hey Jake, Thanks for the links. I was hoping to not have to remove the swingarm, but it looks like it at least has to be unbolted and shifted out of the way. Oh well, sounds like a fun Saturday is in my future. | ||

It is one bolt to disconnect the shock to get the additional clearance. | ||

As Froggy says, it is only one bolt and, with the side bags off, is fairly easy to get to and remove. It is the least of your challenges in this process. | ||

Cool, good to know. I've had bad karma lately. Yesterday I replaced my clutch cable, there were just a couple strands left at the clutch lever. I went for a test ride and my headlight blew out. Replaced that tonight. So this weekend I'll tackle the fuel sensor and wires. |
