I enjoy wrenching on the Uly as much as anyone does, but this task got just a bit tedious. Hope the new gasket holds up til next winter anyway. Next up, change fork oil. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk19/SnackBauer /Buell%20XB12X%20starter%20gasket%20replace/3697ae f6.jpg |

Did you use the new metal/rubber version? If so and as long as you properly torque the two bolts, you should be good to go for some time. |

The one that leaked was the original gasket, HD part number 31488-81C, which appears to be steel with rubber coating. I replaced it with what I got from American Sport Bike, part number 5934, which is much thinner and lighter, seems to be aluminum coated on both sides with a rough textured material. Did mine a little over a year ago after I had seen some leakage. I agree that it was tedious. About a month ago I had seen traces of the same leakage. After closer inspection it turned out that the oil was coming from much higher. It wasn't the starter gasket leaking but turned out to be the rear rockerbox. You'll find that there are more occurrences of the rear rockerbox gasket issues then there are starter gasket issues found here on badweb. |

If you put Hylamar gasket sealer on it it will not leak.Hylamar is resistant to oil & gas & does not harden.I use it on all my primary gaskets & such as a way to keep reusing them. |

I'm 90% sure it was the starter gasket. Using a small mirror, I was able to see directly under the starter, and there was an oily trail coming from the starter's gasket. Could also be the rocker box cover, I'll definitely keep an eye on it. Unfortunately, I won't know for a few months, Winter sucks. Not to start an oil thread, but I think I'm done with synthetic oil. Seems like whenever I use it on a bike, oil starts oozing out of everywhere. The noise is another thing I don't like about it. So, I'll be doing my Spring oil change using Brad Penn 20w50. |
