According to this review several iPhone apps work without cell phone coverage.

There are several iPhone apps that do not rely on cell phone coverage. Magellan makes one - their Roadmate app, for instance. Pure GPS using maps it keeps in the iPhone (and thus using up some of the storage space, unfortunately).

The normal "Maps" app that Apple supplies relies on both GPS for the location and cell phone access for the maps, of course.

Try loading the entire U.S. into your phone.

Then try reading them in the bright sunlight.

OK, I get it. My point was that your original criticism is not entirely accurate. I'm not really into debating the merits of a standalone gps vs a phone based gps.

For those of you on T-mobile, they are blowing out their GarminFone units. These have real GPS units in them, run the Android OS. I bought one for my daughter and she loves it. If you're on T-Mobile and don't mind sticking with them, $49 is a cheap way to get a real GPS plus a phone.

This is a worthy topic for discussion as I'm sure many on this list have considered GPS units for their bikes.

No offense intended

The unit I'm using nuvi295w is this phone minus-the phone. It also has wi-fi so I can check my e-mail. I can also move it to the cage and inside my casa connect to my house audio for playing the mp3. I use a standard phone (no data plan). Vibration is not an issue since I have it mounted to the tank bag.
