First... I have no experience with the GPS listed above. I just want add this... I bought a "MIO" GPS two summers ago. It was a cheaper unit intended for use in a car. I used that supplied suction cup mounting hardware and stuck it all the way left over the speedo. I used the MPH on the GPS and could still see the high end of the tachometer. It worked great for HALF the summer but started blacking out intermittently. I have a buddy that works on electronics and he said that it shook itself to death and the connection from power cord to circuit board was toast. Unfixable. (It did vibrate when sitting at stoplights but not when riding.) I now own a Garmin Zumo 550 and love it! Waterproof, shock resistant, it came with a handlebar RAM mount and all the wiring needed to mount it on the bike. It also came with a car suction holder with a speaker. BTW...the wife and I use "Scala Rider" headsets and the bluetooth on the Zumo hooks up to my headset and my cell phone automatically! Most people can't tell I am talking on the phone in my helmet! It is also nice to get directions by voice so you can keep your eyes on the road, especially in heavy traffic. I know it's more $$$ but if you are on the NICE list you could ask Santa! Merry Christmas to all!!! |

I've never been a fan of GPS' to be honest - I think I know how to read a map. Last week my wife had a seminar in Springdale/Bentonville, AR and we decided to drive down - 800 miles each way. She kept after me to get a GPS, so I jumped into Best Buy on our way out of town and picked up a $79 Nuvi 255W, and hooked it up... just to make her happy. I got lost in DT St. Louis and 6 minutes later we were back on track..thank you Nuvi. On the way back we hit a stretch of I-70 that was solid ice (they didn't salt the roads there for some reason)and saw 35 trucks and cars overturned or off the road - a tractor trailer flipped and blocked the west bound lane - so they closed that lane, then a blizzard started up, and they closed I-70 (both ways) just west of Geenup, IL. At about 2:30PM, I hit lodging on the GPS found the only motel---a ratty one---in Greenup, called and gave them my card. 20 minutes later we were in our room, safe and warm - they re-routed everyone off the freeway that evening and into the night and there were cars and trucks just about everywhere. The next day, when we hit Akron, we got caught in another blizzard - when we got home my wife kissed the house. Now my GPS and I are buddies for life - i just ordered (back ordered) the 500 from Cabela's for the bike. Of course my wife will NEVER let me forget she was right...yes dear. Merry Christmas Y'all! . |

I am great with maps. It's the Eagle Scout in me I guess. Now that I am Married (22 years now) we do a lot of trips in our RV, where I drive and she reads the maps. This did not work. I started using GPS around 15 years ago (when you had to use the GPS with a laptop for maps)I realized "gps is the best thing you can do for a marriage!" Now for motorcycle riding, I use my mapping skills to put the route I want into the GPS and let the GPS do the routing for me during the trip. PS: I had a Nuvi 760 die last year (18 months old), same symptoms as the guy who had one that shook to death. But Garmin must have known about a problem with this model because they sent me a new one no questions asked. |

I have the nuvi 550. 179 shipped for a 500 is a fantastic deal. The nuvi 500 series is a cross over unit. It is water proof, and even has a "scootoring" mode. Has held up fine, and I would recommend one to anybody. Does not have the bells and whistles, no blue tooth, but still a great unit for the price. |

""Does not have the bells and whistles, no blue tooth, but still a great unit for the price."" The topos and being waterproof is what did it for me with the Nuvi 500. But you can add topos and a Ram waterproof box to the 255W as well. The last thing I want do do in my helmet while on my bike is answer the friggin' phone - I live on my cell phone at work all day, the bike is my get-away-from it-all vehicle. . |

Cell phones are just another way for the MAN to keep tabs on you, and tax you. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on that Magellan unit because that Nuvi 500 looks like a much better unit. |

I notice you can also take advantage of another $20 off that Cabela offer for any order over 150 bucks. That brings that Nuvi 500 down to 159 bucks. Seems like a deal to me. |
