Hey Board! Ran into a new issue and it occurred to me that I should know more about the used '06 that I bought from a local dealership. In the middle of replacing the rear tire (chose the D616 after careful consideration and research), the technician at the Ducati Dealership (long story, don't ask) noticed that my rear bearings were toast. Well, he ordered the correct part number only to receive a bearing set with the wrong OD. More research and a discovery. Upgrade? Apparently this is an option. So, enough rambling and to the point: Is it kosher to find the previous owner and get the inside info on my ride? I have less and less faith in the local Harley Dealership and would like to have the confidence of riding a motorcycle that is safe.

Bearings are a common issue with 06 I haven't had any problem with them, and ever 2 tyres i change then, and for the price of them it's worth doing, also make sure they tighten the wheel to the right torque over tight will toast the bearings, the up grade is another thing, there is the 2010 wheel with 3 bearings, but in my case I run SKF bearings and wont upgrade to a 2010 wheel, also remember to use anti seize compound on the axle so next time it's easy to take off.

The only factory option for rear wheel bearings on the Ulysses is the 2010 rear wheel with 3 (vs. 2) bearings each of a larger diameter than the 2006-2009 units. It also has separate external seals. If your bike has the original wheel, the latest factory replacement bearings are: E0005.02A8B, Rear wheel bearings

It may be possible that the previous owner modified the wheel to take larger bearings, but a lot of people here researched this and didn't think it was possible as there's not much excess "meat" in the hub of the wheel. For more background on Uly rear wheel bearing problems, check this thread in the Uly New Owner's section:

As to your original question, I imagine if the original owner is still hanging around Badweb (assuming he ever did), he'll be glad to respond to you.

I recently got a set of mis-packaged bearings. I ordered E0004.02A8B for a front wheel, and got E0002's - steering head bearings. The inner race on them is "taller" than the outer race, making them look like a top-hat when you lay them flat on a table, and they have a blue seal.

I kept them anyway, "just in case", in addition to a correct re-ordered set of wheel bearings.

Wheel bearings are either orange seal (old style) or black seal (updated style) for the 2 bearing wheel. The update bearings are exactly the same size ID and OD, they just have a different style seal. The part number in the post above - E0005.02A8B - is correct for a 2 bearing wheel, which would be the OEM wheel on a 2006. .02A8 without the B is the original style.

If you go to a bearing dealer, what you want are sealed ball bearings, no. 6006-2RS - which are 30 mm ID x 55 mm OD x 13 mm wide.

SKF and Koyo are a couple of good brands, but not necessarily any better than the OEM parts.

Its nice to have the history, I do, of a bike. Oil changes and the like.

People do not seem to treat Ulys like other XBs. A Lightning is not a R1 is it?

As long as the engine is sound, no rattles or oil burning, and the gearbox works right, check the output/5th gear shaft for wear, you should not have to many problems. The bikes sound enough.

"Is it kosher to find the previous owner and get the inside info on my ride?"

I had a new owner of a bike I traded in contact me once. His main concern was to see if the dealer was giving him a straight story. He turned out to be a nice guy, and I told him everything I knew about the bike. Many upgrades that the dealer did not mention. I also gave him a set of slip-ons that I had no use for.

My experience is that bike owners love to talk about their bikes, previous or new, it doesn't matter.

Turns out the previous owner put '10 wheels on a '06. Would of helped when I dropped it off for the repair. I'll take pictures and post them (of the bike). Somebody might recognize it...
What's the opinion on mixing the treads on a bike? The dealer sold the bike to me with mismatched tires. D616 on the front and a Dunlop Sportmax on the back. I am just curious because I switched the rear back to a D616 and the handling got WAY better. It makes me wonder about whether of not the local dealer is playing loose with their used bikes...

This would be the first I've heard of '10 bearings going south. It makes me wonder who pressed them in as an improper job in that area would be the only reason they would fail so soon.

I met the previous owner of my Uly at the dealer, the parts guy actually introduced us. Turned out he had Palmer w/s brackets and Tuono mirrors that he had taken off the bike, sold them to me at a great price and they now once again are gracing the bike. He told me a lot about the bike, so I'm very grateful to the dealer employee, he saved me a bunch, and I have gained a new acquaintance out of the encounter.

Checking to see if there is any opinion on the mixed tread issue. The more I ride on the 616, the more I realize how much I was fighting the bike...
Bluntly, was I an idiot for purchasing a bike with mixed treads? Should I feel like I was not well taken care of by the local dealer? To refresh the issue: D616 front with a Sportmax Rear.

You won't find many D616 fans here. Many of us (myself included) have mixed a D616 rear with a different front tire and made out all right, but the middle groove of the D616 front gives it a vague on-center feel while other riders have reported that it feathers and cups fairly easily. That's bad enough when the tires are matched, but considerably worse when they're not. As soon as your D616 rear wears out, I'd look at replacing both with a set of Scorpion Syncs or maybe remount the Sportmax and buy a matching front tire for it.
