Hi all, Anybody out there bought or built a rack for the back of a Uly? I'd like something that I could attach to the stock rack but bigger. Then I could take it off and run the case when I needed to. Any thoughts?

Do a search. It's a Hepco-Becker topcase, I wouldn't be surprised if someone made a rack that would clip onto the case rack in place of the case...

A large rack off the stock top rack will give you a large case of the tail wagging the dog, not to mention too much weight up top for my liking off the tarvy.

I have made a couple of 3/16" aluminum plates that bolt to the triple tail and then bolted cases to the plates. I have used the t-tail for a "top case" for a couple of years, but the flex it has over rough terrain caused some problems with the load shifting.

Have one for sale in the classifieds. Will get the link if you or anyone else is interested.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Itileman, That's cool but I think I'd have to remove the stock rack and I'd like to leave it on for mounting the top case. Maybe I could do something like that and attach it to the stock rack.

Sharlguy, That's kinda what I'm thinking of but man that price is crazy. Time to see if I can make one for the stock rack.

I've been thinking of using a cutting board. I've seem some of them on more off road bikes.

Thanks again for the help guys.

I have a friend that works at a machine shop that just finished building one for me, I'll post pics later tonight when I get home from work.

It's made from thick wall aluminum and is very strong, but also super light.

I've got the Fehling rack from Twisted Throttle...

and I attached the "Fastrack" from Aerostich...

to get this...

It will hold a tonne of weight and it makes a good tool & beer table when making repairs

I know its not what you are looking for but I built a rack that is on top of the stock trunk. It comes in handy on long trips with a passenger. I could'nt find a pic of it.

Hangetsu, according to twisted throttles website the toprack can't be used with the stock side racks. Can you tell us what you did to get it to work?
Blugorilla, looks like your buddy did a good job.

Sharkguy,

My side brackets are Touratech and there was no problem bolting up the Fehling Rack. The arms that reach under the seat do share a bolt with the side brackets, but everything bolted up nicely. I have no idea what the issue is with the stock Givi brackets, but I doubt it's anything that can't be worked around with a little fabricating.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I made this rack out of 1/2" steel tubing to get a little more capacity.

I drilled the lid and mounted a half-dozen military air fittings for bungee-nuts.
I keep a small net on them.

Nice setup Badrap! Because I lack opposing thumbs, I mean the ability to weld in a clean fashion, I went with the Givi unit that's available from Twisted Throttle. I started with this but didn't like it:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/6 20/419/

Then went to this:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productlist/1 2/

I really need to learn how to weld and not just melt/ruin/mutilate things with a welder. I like yours better.

Thanks Jake. Hepco Becker makes a rack that I think will work for the top case but I wanted my own version.

Thanks Hangetsu. I have the Hepco/Becker outdoorsman racks. They look like they are closer in then the ones you have. Might be a problem fitting with them. Nice bag! I have an ortlieb also and it's been a great bag.
