I want to put on Aux lights on my Uly (xb12X) and I'm not sure where to put them/mount them. I want to see yours to get some ideas.
thanks-chris

I copied a setup I first saw on Webe's Uly:

Lights are ~$16 "Burners" from Advance Auto Parts. I used a ~$5 relay wired into the high beam circuit.

The brackets mount between the turn signals and the cowl, and are made from sections of 2" x 2" x 1/8" steel angle, 1-1/8" long. I took my time rounding the corners, smoothing the cut edges, priming and painting. 2 years later, the brackets still look like new.

No pics, I mounted my burners right on the turn signal stalks with loc-tited 3/4 inch sheet metal screws. If you're careful you'll avoid the conduit for the signal wires. When they come off, if ever, just swap the signals and the holes will be on the bottom! Wired thru a relay with a switch on the trigger wire.

Tough pic to see since they're off and it's daylight with a front side view. Stuck the light weight Optronics right on the beak. Has held up for 7k miles over a lot of tough country.

I really like those small lights on the fork legs. I'd like to have a pair pitched slightly outward, sort of a cornering lamp almost. Did you make or buy the bracket?

Brackets are part of the kit from Clearwater Lights.

Hella Optilux 2500. LED cateye ring wired to low beam; main lamps wired to high beam.

Mounted to the holes vacated by the turn signals, when I mounted CR mirrors/signals.

Court,
Those small lights that Hugh and Wolfridge show don't throw much light. I've had them on my bike and they are great for being seen but not so much for seeing out ahead of your bike. The 3" round aux lights that can be had for just a few dollars more at walmart or auto supply stores are so much better all around.

I'm still looking at options . . . I really like having plenty of light.

The PIAA HID 35w kit is $1,200 and I'm thinking there may be other options.

The 3" 55watt Optilux do the job for only about 23 dollars for a pair. 1200 for light seems a wee bit over the top. And if you dump the bike you'd be out most of that 1200 because I doubt the insurance company would cover 1200 dollar lights.

Craig- mine seem to throw plenty of light, they just don't throw it very far. At night it's amazing how much light they seem to throw STRAIGHT DOWN towards the front tire. I may try a pair of the 3" round lights and see how much better they are; that'd be an easy swap for me.

BTW- I found an article on line a year or so ago (by someone who at least appeared to have credentials to back up his statements) that claimed these cheap lights are copies of similar high dollar PIAA and Hella lights and are virtually identical in performance for a fraction of the cost.

The cheap lights (like I have from Wmt) are just that. Cheap lights. The housings, once opened, will not stay closed. They can leak in the rain. Replacement bulbs are not found at auto stores, but in the light bulb section of your local hardware store for about $5.50 each. I noticed that when replacing a bulb, I had the same one in a desk lamp in my office. At 55w, they draw pretty heavy.

But, when your headlights crap out near the top of the Garnet Mountains at 11:00 at night, they're real nice to have. Long story - the ghosts of Garnet Mountain Ghost Town hate me. I have dropped my Uly 3 times in two years, all three on the way to, just short of Garnet Mountain Ghost Town.

I took a pair of these: http://www.kchilites.com/accessories/mounting-brackets/bracket-tube-clamp-black/

and added a pair of simple PIAA 510's and mounted them on the fork legs like this:

p

These only work on the smaller fork legs (43mm). The larger (47mm) legs won't take the light mounts.

I'm still enjoying my John Deer's mounted on a GME bar. Must be about 4 years now. The light buckets are entirely rubber. Weatherproof and virtually indestructable. Did I mention inexpensive? They use a sealed beam bulb and there are about a hunnert choices. I've only tried a few and am thing of a combo. The floods are the bomb but are lacking on the highway. The aircraft landing lights work pretty well but are hungry. Gonna try one of each next.

I've got about $100 in this setup including the Autoswitch and a small selection of sealed beam bulbs. So far, it has proved to be very durable and user friendly.

Itileman,

If you go the KC bracket route, check your fork travel for clearance between the bracket and the fender. If you have the lower fender like mine, you may have to dress the edge of the fender that sits behind the fork leg a bit with a file or dremel to allow the bracket to pass next to the fender without a rub.

Its not painful or a time vampire but I forgot to mention it in the first post.

I found the set I have at a Pep Boys and have seen them in other auto parts stores since discovering and buying them there.

Jake - thanks for the info. I run a chopped XT/XB fender on the front now, but there are still a few inches left ahead of the forks. A few more nicks won't hurt a thing.

I have fork mounted Motolights on my 2007 and love them. They throw a lot of light and are very durable.

Shark - what kind of light output do the LED's really have? I like the idea, but I'm still a little gunshy about the lumens...

I don't have a pic yet, but I am running the Denali LED lights from Twisted Throttle. They throw a lot of light, a low draw, and were easy to mount and intsall. I just bought a piece of barstock at Home Depot, drilled holes and sandwiched it between the front fender and what the fender is mounted to. Will try to get a pic this weekend.

Mine are mounted the same way as Drunk+Uncle. Here is a picture of the lights ON. I also did the HI Beam/ LO beam mod. I have plenty of light now and I angled the right Aux light slightly to the ditch to help spot deer.

I have used the lights for 2+years with no problems. The lights are metal and not cheap plastic. I paid $49 + shipping.

Rat, I found out about them here.

These things are BRIGHT! I am considering adding a dimmer for them as they are actually a bit much. Mine are the spots. He also offers a broader beam. Some folks are using one of each. There is a pretty good write up and pics on the adv site.
