Alright. I have been doing the "due diligence" by researching all the threads and other sites. You all seem to be the most straight forward and helpful. I bought a used '06 after abusing a Blast for 4 months. Greatest bike ever. Huge fan, right away. However, and this is a big deal to me, my fuel light comes on at 110 miles. I range from 31 to 33 mpg. I check my tire pressure before I ride, I just changed the oil and I checked my air filter for obstructions. Nada. I live in Oregon and we have the 10% ethanol mix here. Oh, I ride 30-50 miles a day in mixed traffic and I am sitting at 26k+. I have tried to sit in the right lane at speed limit, out of fifth and off the throttle. Nothing seems to be helping. Is there something that I can check? I have a shop manual and engine experience. Help! I see wildly varying stats for the Uly. What's normal? |

Wow, something ups. The 06 & 07's seem to get the best mileage. You should be at, at least 45mpg. Closer to 50. Fifth gear at the speed limit(60-70) should give you great mpg. Plugs? O2 sensor? Bad ECM? Someone with way more knowledge will help |

God. I hope it's not the O2 sensor... I'll order new plugs. Cheap and easy is the way. At first anyway. |

Low 60's are my normal, 75mpg is my peak on my 06 XB. You don't want to see my Blast fuel economy. Oh, and my gas guzzling 1125's are doing better than hat you get. (All running 10% ethanol) Something is wrong with your setup, but I can't think of anything obvious you didn't mention. What is your AFV currently at? |

Okay. I'll not try to hide behind ignorance. Fill me in. AFV. Can I affect a change as a primary user? |

Adaptive Fuel Valve! Okay. I'll start poking around... |

Value, not valve. Get yourself an ECMspy cable from American Sport Bike, it is a must have, especially for troubleshooting an issue that may be related to the ECM. |

I regularly get about 43 mpg on my Uly for commuting. Start and stop makes a huge difference. And I had an eye opener trailering the Uly behind the Saab for a trip... the Saab has a built in real time fuel economy meter. For "bags on" versus "bags off", I lost 1 to 2 mpg.... even when on a trailer behind the Saab. So I suspect bags are a factor as well. Tire pressure is a big factor also, make sure that is right. And alchohol based gasoline makes less energy regardless... so you will never do as well as real gas. All possible factors... |

Bags cost me about 2mpg as well - airframe drag is a bitch. Run in fourth, not fifth. My 06 is happiest when I'm spinning it at or above 4k...regardless of throttle position. It likes to cruise there at 10% throttle; it likes to burn up and down mountain roads between 4500 and the rev limiter at WOT. More and more I'm finding fifth...quiets things down, but actually *hurts* fuel economy. Get the ECMSpy cable. Do a TPS reset and AFV zero and let it re-learn for your riding style. What tires? I run 38/40psi f/r in the stock D616's on mine, bumping from 36/38 was good for 1mpg. And ignore Froggy's mileage figures. He's a freak. My helmet weighs more than he does WITH his Aerostitch on! |

My 06 is getting around 33 mpg. I haven't had time to check out yet. Of course that is on Kalifornia crap fuel. |

My '06 Uly gets 50 MPG regularly; lowest was 48, highest 52. I use only Top tier 91 octane; So Cal blends. Can't blame the fuel. |

Great! Lots of good stuff. I forgot to mention that the bike came with some great extras... Belt tensioner, upgraded windshield, oil separator and this rectangular grey dongle with 4 pin connectors on each end in the tool kit. It has a DDFI code list attached. How do I use it? |

I have to get ready for work so I'll have to pick this info later. Will someone lay out the software/hardware interface process? I understand that the program may not be downloadable, and that I may need to by the interface. But, once I have everything in place, how do I proceed. Judging by the pictures form the ECMspy website, I may already have what I need. I just need to know how to hook it up and make the changes. Hey Ratbuell, thanks for the gentle correction (valve/value) and I am closely monitoring psi. I hate the feeling I get when I lose pounds in the tires. I may be crazy, but I feel like I can tell by handling if the tires are getting low... Thanks again! |

You folks realize that gasoline is a fungible product and shipped in pipelines to delivery terminals where the delivery trucks pick it up, right? The additives that differentiate gasoline's are injected just before the gasoline is put into the delivery trucks. That is the point a gasoline takes on a 'brand'. The additives, all designed with the same throttle body, injector, combustion chamber cleaning goals are slightly different but that is all that differentiates gasoline brands. |

Hey Teeps, why do you use so little Shell? Problem with the fuel or availability or other? |

Went on a 350 mile spirited jaunt last weekend through PA's Appalachians. Fuel light didnt come on till I hit 185 miles(side bags on), then the nearest gas station was another 15 miles away. By the time I refueled, my odometer read 203 miles. Definately something going on with your set up. The gas consumption was heaven compared to the SuperDuke I traded the Uly for |

Buellerxt is right, it all goes into a big 'ol pipe. Even the ethanol is added at the truck terminal, or at least not at the refinery. |

I admit that I beat the snot out of my Uly pretty much all the time, but I generally don't see much more than 35 mpg, maybe 40 if it's a freeway run. It doesn't bother me, she runs liked a raped ape and puts grins on my face all day long! |

My '09 XT is in the mid 30s when buzzing around town. Low 40s when slabbing it. And the bike currently has 21K on it. |

Whistler Posted on Thursday, November 18, 2010 Hey Teeps, why do you use so little Shell? Problem with the fuel or availability or other? Convenience mostly, fewer Shell stations than the others, where I ride. I use Chevron the most for the Techron they put in their fuel. http://www.techron.com/ http://www.toptiergas.com/ |

I am in the EU and get, on 95 RON fuel, 40mpg in town and 55mpg on a run but thats not riding it hard. If I ride the bike hard it is 35 to 38 mpg, on average, which is about right I would say and very fair. You pay for power but one of the great things about the bike is that you can choose one or the other. Reset the TPS and AFV. Also, first, clean back the rear sub-frame Earth point, as it messes with the ECM values Via the Earthing of the ECU, off the loom. Doing this fixed all my electrical/running problems, after two years, in 20 mins. |

I have an '09 XT and never get more than 36mpg. Usually between 30 and 34mpg between commuting and riding the twisties. I too am disappointed with the fuel economy I am getting, but I agree with andymnelson: the fun factor outweighs my annoyance with the mpgs. For what its worth, the local HD shop has replaced a million parts on my bike, including the fuel pump, the oil pump, and the o2 sensors, cylinders, etc. The MPGs have remained unfortunately low, especially for an "adventure" bike. It really puts doubts on the capabilities of this machine to do long trips in areas with few gas stops. Rollingwet: I believe that the "rectangular grey dongle with 4 pin connectors on each end in the tool kit" is an error code reader from American Sport Bike. Does this look familiar? http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/9016.html |

I've been wondering if gas varies by region? On my local roads no matter how I ride the mileage is only 35-37 mpg. When I occasionally meet up with a NJ group I put on between 300-400 miles of hard riding and my mileage jumps to 44 mpg. The first fuel-up is out of state and that's the only difference. Now you're going to tell me the air's different? |

I think it does vary. I ride the pi$$ out of my Uly at events like Buelltoberfest...and get BETTER mileage than I do riding it moderately hard around home. It might not be better versus worse fuel...it may be that these things just like diet variety |

I commute between WI and IL every day, and there is a distinct difference in the way both fuels smell (93 octane). I put 87 octane in my car, and the difference in those fuels is even more distinct. WI gas (while on the scoot) gets me 52 mpg. IL gets 49. This average taken this past summer. |
