'06 - I do 40 miles each way for work at about 75mph on the freeway and get 52mpg like clockwork. When I was riding mostly country roads to work and back I averaged 46mpg.

Oh yeah - race ecm, modified stock exhaust, drilled air box, lots of different fuel maps but mileage never changed much from stock.

It is. Well the pressure may be different at least. At higher elevations, you have lower air pressure and density. Less air gets pumped into the motor, hence less fuel is needed for combustion. The result is greater fuel economy. On the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is something like 5000' above sea level, I have gotten 75mpg on my XB, 54mpg on my 1125CR and 55mpg on my 1125R. At sea level, I typically am about 10mpg lower.

Tire pressure, wind, altitude, your weight, riding position, fuel quality/blend, ECM fuel/spark mapping, and most importantly, your riding style all affect your fuel economy.

Indeed it does, different regulations regarding mixtures and oxygenation. Up in the north easy its all the same thing these days, but there was a time when I could go to Jersey to get some non-ethanol blends to experiment with.

I have always averaged 50 to 52 mpg on my '06 riding a nice fast pace with it on the twisties in and around East Tennessee. When I have Really wicked it up, with the revs above 4000 continually it has dropped as low as 43 mpg.

On the Interstates cruising above 80 (GPS) it will run at about 46 mpg. I once did about 100 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the posted 45 and it did just over 61 mpg.

I always run with all three bags on, usually carrying at least 25 pounds of unnecessary stuff in them.

I'm glad to read about all of the different mpg's everyone gets. Still looking for the solution... I am going to buy the ECMspy cable ($50.00) and install the software (free off the FTD website). I am also going to change the plugs. Thanks for all the input. I'll check the grounding point on the subframe today.

I average between 30 and 35 miles per gallon. Load plays the biggest factor for me, since not flogging the throttle is hard to do. 2 up with side cases and top case = 30mpg. Solo no bags = 35mpg on average.

Have gotten near 45mpg on a few long highway trips which encountered a lot of long 55mph traffic jams.

Most of my riding is between downtown Saint Paul and Minneapolis so that could be a big factor to the less then optimal mpg numbers. A lot of stop and go. Plus I am not one of the lighter riders out there. I think combined weight (riders, gear, bags, cargo etc.) added to a stock Uly plays a big factor in mpg variances amongst us all. I remember a guy fretting about poor mpg numbers in the past and then it came out he weighed more then most couples riding two up...

Which now has me thinking, do oil companies have a stake in Twinkies? I have heard they are close in make up to plastic.. hmm...

I would suggest checking the timing.
If it pinging, the previous owner might have retarded the timing.
Retard it too much and the performance and fuel economy go down badly.

I had a ham-fisted guy work on my X1 when it was still under warranty. It was pinging a bit so he solved the problem as he would have solved the same problem on his shovelhead: tweaked the timing back an unknown amount.

My X1 stopped pinging.
It also stopped pulling wheelies and MPG went from 52 to 35.

I bring this up since it's easy to check with a light.
