Well Doc, there was something missing from the parts you have left and that's your ASS! But that's ok, that's a given. I should have kept my mouth shut cause you might actually put a picture of it on there!!  Seriously, I'm glad your here to tell the story and that's all that is really important. Machines can be replaced. I've been down on black ice, I know the feeling of surprise! One second your in a turn and the next your in mid air as your bike exits stage left! Take the insurance and go get another and as soon as your healed up, saddle up.  | ||

Glad you are okay, Greg. Get it fixed, or replaced, and ride on, but NOT in those mountains in Nov! I love that area, one of my favorites, but limit it to April through Oct., with caution in April and Oct. You are a lucky man. | ||

Damn Greg, I showed Lynn the pics and she said "that poor guy, he has the worse luck." Of course I kept her informed of your other adventures as well. We enjoyed the East Coast trip. I am glad there were some good Coloradians there to help you. Lynn says get well soon. She has almost fully recovered from her accident on her Harley a few months ago... Geez Doc - Well, a cat is reported to have 9 lives...professors apparently surpass that. You are hell on calcium / phosphorous based body parts. Sure glad it wasnt any worse!! I've hit black ice before - in fact right in the driveway you parked on here in Tumwater. The ST experienced the forces of gravity vs traction - gravity won... At least I was close to home. By the time you're fully healed, the Tiger 800xc should be at the dealers. You considering another Duc' ? Heal well Doc - winter is a good time to recover from these things. So sorry to read this, but glad to hear your going to be ok. As you know, bikes are easier to replace/heal. On the bright side,(don`t ya just hate it when people say that?) you now can post more of your great Uly adventures here. Well,at least until you replace the Duc.  Heal up, and ride on, Doc! | ||

Doc, I really admire your attitude after getting into a mess like that. I don't think I would have been in any kind of mood to write about it. You are obviously one tough guy! Trying to catch up on all my "crash correspondence" before my ortho appointment tomorrow...I might end up with my right hand in a cast, which would somewhat hinder typing. A few good questions came up which I'll try to address... What Gear was I Wearing? Although I have a custom 2-piece full leather suit (ahh, the ol' black Uly before the deer strike):  with the ADV-style bikes I usually wear textile gear. I was wearing the same gear as when I totalled the Uly on a deer in 2008: * Shoei Hornet-DS helmet * Firstgear Kiliminjaro jacket (old style, not the newer one) * Firstgear HT overpants * Tourmaster Winter Elite gloves * Oxtar Matrix boots Looks like all the gear (except helmet, of course) is salvageable. Helmet has deep abrasions in jaw area, forehead area, and back of skull. I don't wanna think about what my melon would look like sans helmet... Totalled or Not? A number of you have expressed skepticism over whether the MTS 1200 is "totalled." Aside from the typical damage (levers, turn signals, windscreen, plastic parts, etc.) my major concern is whether anything is BENT. That includes every bearing surface, from the fork stepper motors to the forks themselves to the engine crankshaft. A bike + rider (say 500+160 lb) traveling at 67 mph possesses 99,000 ft-lb of kinetic energy: that energy has to go somewhere. Since the bike first lowsided on the right side, then ended up on its left side it had to "flip over" at some point, with associated possible impacts. My concern is the effect of these impacts on the previously-mentioned bearing surfaces. My "worst nightmare" would be that the bike is NOT totalled, and is repaired by the dealer (BTW, I have lots of confidence in my dealer), but afterwards is "not quite right." The ride & handling of the 1200S is (for me) absolutely perfect: silky smooth, amazingly light but utterly stable, precise...you get the picture. To have it emerge from this 67 mph bouncing as anything less than that would be intolerable. If the bike hadn't been so perfect (again, MHO) before the accident, I wouldn't be quite so concerned. So I REALLY hope something major is bent/broken so there is no debate. The Replacement Bike? First of all, I'm really glad I kept the '06 Uly after I bought the Milledue. I put 85,000 miles on the Uly (and its younger brother) and love riding it. So the Uly will be the immediate replacement with no regrets. As fate would have it, after I got home after the accident I had just received the latest Motorcyclist magazine, with a "MC Comparison: BMW R1200GS vs Ducati Multistrada 1200S." The GS is one bike I had seriously considered, now I have a "second chance"...having put almost 12K miles on the Ducati, do I regret it and would I buy a GS instead? Let's read the article... Hmm, the MTS mirrors are "frustratingly undecipherable blurs"...not for me! Hmm, "objectionable vibration"...not for me! The 1198 was noticeably smoother than the 12GS I rode. Hmm, "touchy throttle and brakes"...not on mine! Methinks this article is somewhat GS-biased. Then I checked the author: Tim Carrithers (6-3, 215). I looked in my full-length mirror: Dr. Greg (5-9, 140). And THAT'S why I'll never feel in control of the GS: too blasted BIG! (before you ask, the F800GS just doesn't press my buttons). To be fair, I will again try to wheedle a decent R1200GS test ride from the local BMW dealer when the time comes. Interestingly, the BMW dealer wouldn't let me take their demo GS1200 off pavement (for which it's explicitly designed), but the Ducati dealer was happy to let me take their demo MTS 1200 off pavement (which most magazine reviewers say it's very poor at). So when the financial dust settles, I will unhesitatingly buy the (almost) exact same bike again: 2011 Ducati Multistrada 1200S Touring. The 2011 bike will have a redesigned centerstand, different fuel mapping, etc. The one thing I really wish they would add is cruise control. All the pieces are there, just need the software. Out west we have some LOOONG stretches between twisties. Are you listening, Bologna? --Doc | ||

Doc, thanks for the update. I was getting worried things were worse than you let on at first b/c there hadn't been any updates. Everything you've ever said about the Multi has made me look harder and harder for reasons not to pull the trigger on one myself. You just may have taken away my last excuse by saying that you'd buy another without hesitation. I have my fingers crossed for you that the wrist isn't bad enough to require a cast. Also I guess after the deer and the hoarfrost saying "keep the shiny side up" takes on a whole new meaning. Be careful out there. | ||

Hoarfrost! I had a wreck last winter that I couldn't explain. Rolled into a corner so gentle it almost couldn't be considered a turn, and the back tire slid out for no reason I could explain. I went back later that afternoon after the sun had come out and found nothing slippery in the road. After reading your post, I'm betting now that it was hoarfrost. | ||

Yep, that article definitely leaned heavily toward the GS - there's another comparison on Motorcycle.com that I think does the same (only glanced at it so far). I'm Tim Carrithers-sized, so I really like when the writer includes their dimensions in their review. Then came the positive Super Tenere reviews...and lower price...just wish the thing looked a bit gnarlier - doesn't look like it has a personality. Ah well...I have time. Glad you're okay, Doc! Thanks for the painful but important frost reminder as we get into that season on the east coast. |
