ECM is still operating while ignition is turned off, this is how the after-run fan timer works. If the ECM is looking for current flow thru the ground-side if the fan-control and you open that circuit with a relay,a open circuit fault will be set.Don't think just because the ignition is turned off the ECM went to sleep!

In that case, why did my CEL not come on after I changed my blown fan? The ECM detects the proper circuit on startup and does not light the CEL.

When the fan was failing the CEL would light intermittently, the ECM would turn the light out when the fan was still operating.

Exactly!!! The answer you seek lies in the question you ask......It is better to teach a man to fish then to take him to a fish-fry!

OK, now it's getting deep around here! But I know what you're both talking about, and have considered one more do-dad switch on my handlebars(or a relay down below hooked into the ignition). Just not sure that's the cleanest way to go about this. I still think finding the logic in the ECM is the key. But I digress........

That is the key!!!! I did all my own ECM programming and damn, this thing runs awesome!!!If you can hook-up the cable and turn on your lap-top,you are 80% done.People have to be reminded that the "RACING" ECM's are the same as stock, except for the software program..

I got a call from my dealer today who said they replaced the TPS on my bike and it's fixed the surging issue!!! I can't wait to pick it up and give it a try. Dang work keeps getting in the way of all my fun.

Finally had the chance to replace the OE ECM with the Erik Buell Racing version.

Didn't go so well, Bike wouldn't idle at all without cranking up the idle. Plus I found that the idle cable only lowers the idle, and it won't raise it without tearing it all down past the airbox base plate.
Idles now, but fluctuates 200 rpms -at 900 to 1100 rpm.
Runs well once moving, but......

What year bike? Did you reset the TPS? It's a must when you replace the ECM.

@ Florida_lime, Even though my bike is a 08 Erik Buell Racing says that the high idle speed is normal at start up and is actually better for the bike. If high idle is your problem then I don't think you have a problem. Did you contact Erik Buell Racing tech about this? They usually respond same day to email.

No.

Set to spec, it would NOT idle at all. I had to turn the idle way up to get it to idle, and even then it varies 200 rpm, constant 900 to 1100 fluctuation.

Picked up the bike and all is well. The new TPS fixed the surging issue. One more happy camper here!

Not sure now - but it wouldn't idle at all at 4.6 - 5.1.

Did you retard the initial timing with the old ecm to keep it from pinging? I had done that and it took 7.1 tps to get it to idle. If you did you might try putting it back to stock and try it. Just brainstorming here. It would be nice if I had more to storm with, maybe I should call it brain rain, or maybe just a mist!!

The couple of times I've done the TPS reset it took me a couple of times to get it right. Maybe it wasn't warmed up enough the first time so I waited the second try until ECMSpy showed it went to closed loop control. Then it started and idled nice.

I can't trust it to make it to work on a 25 mile commute - so I don't think Wisconsin is too do-able either.

But thanks for the offer.

No, but I had advanced it when trying to stop the Skip Spark BS. Worth trying.

Hey all, got a question on the Erik Buell Racing ECM model Y0168.10AH (preprogrammed ECM. The ad states that it is designed for " motorcycles with large muffler can volume race exhaust systems such as XB ProSeries, Dummer, or Special Ops.".... Has anyone run this with stock muffler and filter? I have tried emailing Erik Buell Racing twice, but have not received a response.

Mine: 2010 12X all stock

Yes. When you order it tell them what year model you have and that the bike is completely stock. Email them @ tech@ebracing.com and they will probably respond within an hour after you send it. I have a 08XT completely stock and the Erik Buell Racing ecm. It made such a difference that it feels like a different bike. The improvement was huge!

Long term report on the Erik Buell Racing ecm on my 08. Initial impression was good other than they did not give me the 09 fan logic I asked for so I mailed them and ebr was awesome, they said send it back and we will correct the oversite. So I decided to give it a run and dont really like the "new" fan logic so I am going back to the 09 version. Bike ran pretty good, defintely better down low and about the same on top with a bit of a flat spot around 4K rpm. The flat spot seemed to get bigger and bigger so I tried all of the voodoo like 20 minutes at a set rpm which heped a little then driving it like a raped ape which was fun but didnt fix the issue. So today I put the stock ecm back in and sent the race ecm back to ebr for the 09 logic and a check to see if everything else is correct. The bike runs the same as the day I bought it with the stock ecm, I cant figure out why the performance would change with the race ecm. Any ideas or theories out there? Keep in mind it runs exactly as it did when new with the stock ecm so intake leaks and 02 sensor theories wont hold. One last thing is that with the race ecm I got a lot of decel popping which is almost non existant with the stock ecm............
