So I've had a POR-15 kit sitting around for about 10 months (sitting on the comfort kit I've been meaning to install for nearly as long) that I've been meaning to apply to the Uly's pipe. I may finally get around to it in the next few weeks or so.

I know some of you guys (Bromanowski and 1324 for sure) had tried the POR-15. Just wondering how it was working out for you guys with the passage of time.

Someone had also tried Rustbullit. How did that work out?

I used high temperature engine paint (duplicolor with ceramic maybe?) last time instead of BBQ paint... and it seems to be holding up better.

I used the POR15 system exactly as they recommended (all 3 steps plus a topcoat). It rusted through within 2 months.

It's not as bad as it was originally, but still VERY disappointing.

Yesterday I "painted" my muffler with the used oil, I had just changed out. I'll put another coat or two on, and believe the super cheap treatment will work as well or better than most of the others that have been tried.

I make a mess and wipe used oil all over the muffler during every oil change. 8500 miles and the muffler doesn't look good, but the rust isn't to the point of destroying the muffler's structural integrity.

It might help that I change oil every 2000 miles

2000? Wow! What are you using?

I Just changed my oil. Had been using 20/50 Amsoil, switched to 10/40 - 15/50 mix mobile1 for the winter. Had over 5000 miles on the amsoil, but had not burned or used any.

Use Ospho phosphric acid wash to stabilze the rust then paint or oil Oh dino oil works better for rust prevention

That is very disappointing indeed. I'ver used POR-15 for several things with great results. I guess perhaps the heat compromises the effectiveness.

I think you're right about the heat. As our mufflers do reach temperatures above what's recommended for POR15.

And changing your oil every 2000 miles is a waste of resources. More than one person I know has had their (Amsoil) oil tested after they changed it at 5000, only to find it hasn't even begun breaking down yet, and could safely have gone another 5000 miles. But it's your bike and your money.

I own three mufflers for my Uly (stock, race, and Drummer) and I swap them out every 5-10k miles due to the fact that I get bored (and at 44,000 miles I still can't decide which I like the best). Anyway, every time I pull the muffler off I lightly sand it and repaint it with that VHT ceramic paint from the auto parts store...and I have never had a pipe rust.

For full disclosure...I do live in Denver (dry climate)...the race pipe was professionally ceramic coated black (but I still do repaint it)...and I wish that much maintenance was not required!
