Well this is the second time my front muffler strap has broken.
The first time resulted in major warranty repair work on the uly due to me being on an Ironbutt run and not seeing the strap go until I stopped for gas.

I had all the repair work done and currently have a little over 500 miles on the bike and today on the way into work I heard a tinging sound when I pulled into the parking lot. Yep, front strap broke again.

So the question is, what's causing it? The first one was factory installed the second was dealer installed. Is there a torsion mount that could be bad, a front motor mount.... ???

I don't know if it will be long enough but the one fro the d&D is way stronger, i think also boat shops have straps of better quality.

The aftermarket ones I managed to find (two different sources) were not as beefy as the Buell part. That being said, the one I got from "the boat store" is holding up fine, and it's been several thousand miles now.

I'd try one more time and install it myself, carefully following the FSM torque steps (which are fairly involved).

Two failures is odd, but one isn't. And the second might have been the dealer tech not following the manual.

If it were me, I would want to start with a strap that I know I and only I installed, and that I knew followed the factory sequence. I would want to see that one fail before I went too far looking for other problems.

Not again Slowride, I felt your pain on the story of your first stap breaking on the iron butt ride.
I ordered one as an extra just in case mine ever broke again and I keep it in the saddlebag along with the torcca clamp for the muffler and a copy of the proper install sequence, that way if it ever broke on the road I could fix it the right way the first time.
I agree with Reep, I would do it myself to make sure it's right and if it happens again well there are bigger problems. Be sure to check the header bolts as you know.
just so everyone will know, I had my bike at the dealer the day before my strap broke. I told them on the way there I started getting a vibration at 3000rpms on deceleration and I wanted them to check it out. Well, when they were done the shop mgr (at a supposed good dealer mind you) told me my TPS was off and that causes engine vibration. Of course I know better and was going to check it out the next day, well the next day my strap broke because my headers were loose. My point is don't trust the dealers, even the good ones.....
I was there inquiring about an extended warranty and after that I said forget it, I'll fix it myself. FUHD

Slow,

I kept breaking them on the race bike. Xopti and I ended up taking a broken strap, bending back some "ears" drilled some holes in the crease of the "ears" and used a jap exhaust spring to connect the two. Problem solved.

Did you ever figure out why you were breaking the straps.. motor movements, dissimilar metals heating expanding and contracting...

????

Too much torque usage!

Obviously your bike has about 80 ft lbs or so of torque. You are using probably in the range of 95+. Now where do you think these extra torque values come from? It is regaining the extra torque numbers from the exhaust system of course! Physics being what they are extra torque numbers don't just appear, they have to come from somewhere.

That strap probably fractured when it saw you in those pajamas!!

Check your front isolator. If it is worn then it can transfer vibration to the strap and "pop". I had three go until I put a new front isolator on. So far, after that 300 miles, no broken strap
