Any preferences on oil filter for XT besides buying one from an HD dealer?

Mike, it's just plain eerie how similar our Uly experiences are. date purchased, trunk lights added, right down to the model of oil filter used.

I've experimented with Angels (didn't like them) and am now switching to Scorpion Syncs while you seem to like the Scorpion Trails. I think there's a glitch in the Matrix.

I second the WIX 51394. It has the correct rated bypass for the motor.

St. Paul, MN. Harley Davidson is selling their spin on Buell oil filters for 7 bucks. That's what NAPA gets for their WIX equivalent 1394 RV oil filter. These are all just Toyota 4 cyl. oil filters, some higher quality than others.

If you want to use the car equivalent, then you have a long list to choose from:

ACDelco # UPF1233
Amsoil SDF10
Bosch # 3311
Car Quest 85394
Champion # C138
Fram # PH4967
K&N # hp-1003
Mighty # m4477
Napa # 1394
Mobil 1 # M1-103
Motorcraft # FL836
Penzoil # pz39
Purolator # L14476
STP # S4967
Valvoline # vo40
Wal-Mart Super Tech # ST4967
Union Sangyo[OEM Toyota Mfg]#C-170

But the only one's actually rated for motorcycles that I know of are:
Harley/Buell OEM
K&N KN-177
Wix 51394

I went with a car one once, then learned that it could void my warranty, so I pay the extra couple bucks and use the OEM Equivalent WIX now.

And I found that list elsewhere on this site, and do not guaranty it's accuracy.

Hey Mike, why wix vs. K&N?? just wondering? I'm always looking for some other filter,I like the idea of the "nut"on the bottom of the K&N but have not got one yet..

The K&N KN-177 will work the same, but it's double the cost. I used to use the K&N, it works fine and is motorcycle specific, so shouldn't mess with your warranty. It's just expensive.

I'd never put a wrench on the oil filter when installing it. Every vehicle I own gets filters installed hand tight while I'm wearing mechanic gloves for a little extra grip.

The "nut" on the bottom of the K&N filters can be very helpful when removing the filter. Not as much on the bike where it's out in the open, but on a car where it's tucked up inside the exhaust manifold.

It's actually there for racers who need to safety wire the thing.

I get mine from Oreilly's. Any auto parts store should carry them, and 51394 is a pretty common model. I believe it's used on some Toyota 4 cylinders.

I get my Wix direct through Amsoil when I buy my oil.

The NAPA 1394 is the same filter as the WIX 51394. I fortunately have a number of traditional auto parts places near me that stock the WIX. Maybe there is a NAPA near to get the 1394.

Is there something better about the WIX instead of the Buell oem??

The best thing about the wix/napa filter is................................................ .................................................. .................................................. ..............................Not having to go to HD.For me the nearest dealer is 1 1/2 hrs away.Napa is 5 minutes.

Just like with the K&N, the biggest difference between OEM and WIX is cost.

But like Dfishman, I also enjoy not having to go to the Harley dealership.

I bought (and installed) an STP S4967 today. I was in AutoZone and that's what they had in stock.

I'm not too worried.

So the Wix, and Napa filters have the same specs (spring) as the Buell. Right? Napa is closer to me than the crappy HD/Buell dealer. The better HD/Buell dealer is a hour away. I`ll support the good dealer if its the right time (I`m down there) for a filter. I don`t care about a buck or two, just want to know for my general knowledge of it all.

Online, Napa does not list an oil filter for the Buell. Which means that the napa filter listed above is probably an automotive filter that fits. You can have warranty issues using a filter like that.

The WIX, OEM, and K&N are actually made for the specific motorcycles.

If you've got no warranty, the auto ones should work just fine.

I bought a Wal mart super tech filter to check it out at my first oil change. They were made exactly the same as the filter from HD, just peel the sticker off and it's solid black.

I took a Purolator filter apart and my Harley filter apart. They were the same inside. On the top there was an AA stamped on both. Using a strong magnifying glass I would swear they were stamped by the same machine!! They were identical! I have been using the Purolator ever since. Their website says not to use the "Pure One" but the classic filter will work for bikes. I get them at Advanced Auto.

Isn`t the bypass spring different on the bike filters?
