I am interested in adding a Uly to my garage and would like to hear from people that have ridden both the pros and cons of each.

No need to quote the spec sheets, I am really only looking for first hand experience.

Also, my interest is only with the 08+ Uly.

Thanks for your time!

xt is lower if you inseams short and you get free bags.

x has longer suspension travel and less steering lock for moderate off road use and you can pick your own bags.

other than that not much different. personally after having both i would get the x

If I were tall enough to feel comfortable on the Uly, that's what I would've gotten. Since I was not, I went with the XT.

Going with the X you can pick your own luggage, rather than being stuck with the marginal Jouney setup on the XT. (of course you can swap luggage out on the XT at a cost).

I would not buy the XT just to get the bags as I think the bags are the weakest part of the XT. Both of my stock side bags leak.

I have an '09 XT

My stock bags have been great, no leaks. They are huge and can hold a lot of stuff. Almost too much. I'd like to have the outdoorsman bags, smaller, less air drag.

Both are awesome bikes. Comes down to how much dirt/trailing you are going to do. If a lot - go with the X, mostly road touring, the XT.

I live on a dirt & gravel road, go camping a lot, and have gone off many curbs; all without any problems. So far I have yet to really test the bike on dirt, like I have my KLR650, but feel confident on it. I would put on Scorpion Trails if I spent more time in the dirt though.

Ride both! See what you are most comfortable on. Sometimes it also comes down to which one can you get the best deal on. Good Luck!

I purchased my 08XT because I wanted more of a sport touring bike. I was not interested in off road capability. For that I would get an of road bike that has real capability in that area. The XT is lower and has less suspension travel making it more of a road bike. Adding lower bars and better lights gives me the perfect the sport touring bike. Great handling, light weight and I love the motor. Works very well for me.

The side cases leak a bit on occasion. But then so did other bags that I had in the past. To me it is not a big deal since I have always used large zip bags to compress the volume and protect from moisture.

Back In 08 I looked at the Ducati Multi Strada and the Guzzi Norge but I am glad I purchased the Buell.

It's not just the ride height (or some Buell marketing ploy here) - the X and
the XT are completely different motorcycles, altogether. As different as night and day.

The X is an adventure bike (built strictly for adventures) and the XT is a sport touring bike.

If you're looking for adventure (and who isn't), get an X.

The black ones are faster, too.

We have at least one member here who has owned both- hopefully he'll chime in with some first hand comparison info since he's logged several thousand miles on both models.

Without stating the obvious differences... I have a '06 (sorry) X and my wife has the '09 XT (with Outdoorsman bags that we bought at the time of purchase. We sold the Journey's here on BadWeb in basically new & unused condition for a reasonable price.)

With that being said: I LOVE my X, but I can touch alright. My wife LOVES her XT. I'm not really a fan of her XT, but it works for her. If she could (safely) ride my X all the time, she'd have gotten an X for herself. It's just too tall for her.

I think what turns me off to her XT is that my mind tells me I'm on a Uly, but after 45,000 miles on my X, her "Uly XT" doesn't feel right. Maybe it's just me...

I say that if you can touch reasonably well - GET THE X! It just feels right! Also, FWIW - I'm a fan of the pre '08 engines. I think they feel & sound better and I know they run COOLER! My X is never bothersome as far as heat goes, but even with the comfort kit & flash on the XT, it's still one hot sum'bitch when it heats up outside. YMMV!

Ride both if you can. (Even a pre-'08) And judge for yourself.

Good Luck!

i had an 06x i put 38,500 miles on it. it was by far my most enjoyable bike ever. it was great at everything. i bought a 10xt i have 15,000 miles on it and i love it also. but i do have a brand new set of x forks triple trees etc in the garage waiting to swap it over. i think i liked the x suspension better. the ride with the extra travel seems to be a little more plush. i did own both at the same time for about a month. so i was able to compare them back to back.i just prefer the ride with the taller suspension even though i have to tiptoe. just my two cents worth.

I'm with Tachout. I had an '06 X that had well over 34,000 miles on it and I traded it in toward an '08 XT which I have 30,000 miles on. The suspension was better on the X and it allowed me to corner faster, more comfortably than the XT does. The XT isn't bad, not by a long shot; and I can corner just as quickly with the XT. But it just felt more natural on the X.
However, the XT sits lower, and for my short inseam, that's a hugh plus; especially at low speeds.
As far as the bags go, the Journeys on my X were watertight while the journeys on my XT leak. I still really like them, though, and I have no complaints about them. I'd choose them again, if I was offered the choice.
Either is a great bike, and whichever you choose, you'll be riding a winner.

Crusty,
Did you mean the X sits lower as you stated, or that the XT sits lower. I believe the later is correct...but don't quote me

Druelly.

Druelly; I meant the XT sits lower. I've edited my post to correct it. Thanks for spotting my mistake.

So far, I've been able to go anywhere an X can on my 09 XT.
Running on Avon Distanzias, but will be going to the MT-60r's for off road next year.
XB9 gear reduction. Gobi cases.
Would have gone with the X if I was a couple of inches taller, but am a lot more comfy on the XT with my 30" inseam, especially off paved roads.

First of all, thanks to the many replies with good, first-hand feedback on the 2 bikes.

Based on all of the replies, I have decided to look for an X as opposed to XT, but realize I will probably be happy with an XT if I find the right deal.

I will start a new thread asking for first-hand info regarding the 08+ X compared to the pre-08 model.

Thanks again!

Get a X, replace the rear shock with an XT, slide the front forks up a bit. You will have the steering and bag choices of a X with the ride height of an XT.

As with Itileman, I feel there really isn't too much of a difference. I have done plenty of dirt and gravel on my XT. The 17" front tire and wide rear are the performance degrading factors off road on these bikes, not so much the suspension and ride height. I have bottomed out more than once (going over a curb or dirt mound), but it didn't effect anything.

Get the one you feel most comfortable on. You'll be more than happy with either.

Set up identically, the X will give you a little "dirt bike float" after a bump, where the XT will soak up the bump and be done. The XT is more like an XB with a big honkin' seat and some bags.

That said, I just finished yet another long trip on my '06 X (1820.0 miles to Buelltoberfest and back) without a single bike issue (my trying to run a rear tire too long notwithstanding). I do love that bike.

If you have the inseam...go X. You won't regret it. Even if you don't "need" the offroad capability, the added suspension travel is nice to have. Power is identical; rider position once your feet are on the pegs is identical.

And I also have a set of bags that have not leaked one drop (the Buell accessory set, otherwise known as stock XT bags), including this trip where I went from Maryland to Roanoke before the downpour stopped.

My bags don't leak while riding. But parked over night in the rain there was small puddles in the bottom of each.

Either way, I don't like clam-shell bags.

One thing which is often overlooked, are the stronger, reinforced wheels on the X models.
A big plus if you ride gravel roads with some nice potholes. Ride safe Werner

Ive had both and am now with an XT. it fits me better because of the height and frankly i think any uly is too heavy for real offroading so the suspension travel is kinda so what. of course some of the potholes here could justify more travel i gotta admit.
the XT "feels" lighter to me, its more agile. i m told thats cause of the lighter wheels but i think it might be more than that. its like the X is stiff and wants to be man handled, the XT is more of a gentleman on the road.
good luck with your choice and let us know.
