On Wednesday, Sept 15 I crashed my Uly while in the Great Smoky Mtns (US 129 to be exact). I had just finished a run of the Tail of the Dragon and was heading to Foothills Parkway when I lost front tire traction in a right hander. Speed was not a factor as I was taking it easy because I know the county PD patrols that area pretty heavily. I went down and the bike and I slid into the oncoming lane where another bike just missed me. The folks on that bike went down as well trying to avoid me and my bike.

Luckily no major injuries, I was just bruised, no broken bones or other damage. The husband and wife also received minor injuries (we rode to the hospital together).

Just learned that the bike is totaled so I will be thinking about replacement as soon as I can settle with the insurance company. Unfortunately with the motorcycle market what it is I will probably not get very much for the Uly.

I just hope to get enough to get into another bike without too much ouch factor.

This bike has been one incredible machine for me, I have loved every second riding it over the past 4 years. I will surely miss it!

I have been checking on this forum for a replacement as well as cycle trader. I have come to the conclusion that for just a little more than a 08 or 09 Uly I can get a used BMW K12100GT so that is what I am shooting for as of this moment.

Time and insurance settlement will tell.

Goodbye old friend, I will miss you.

If you really love that Uly don't let them junk it until you look at it. It's amazing how little damage will result in the bike being "totaled". You might be able to buy it back for a couple of thousand dollars and fix it for a few hundred more.

Share any insights in to why it was totaled, if you can or care to. Was it the cumulative cost of items to be replaced or one significant dent/ding/crack/bend that was the nail in the coffin?

Just curious about insurance company logic sometimes.

To bad about the the bike but thankfully everyone is OK.
If you rode it after the crash maybe it can be saved.

I have not seen the actual estimate to repair yet, just talked to the HD dealer that did the estimate. Agreed that there can be Surprisingly little damage to cause an estimate to skyrocket. From my initial look over the bike after the crash the following would have to be replaced:

Handlebars
Sub-Frame for seat (broken in half
Seat pan
Mirrors
air box cover
both hand grips
MadStad windshield and flyscreen
Aux lights
Right side foot peg
Rear brake lever

That's about it, the rubber puck on the frame was scrapped as was the rear swing arm at the axel. There was no other apparent frame damage. I will have to ask for a copy of the repair estimate and what the salvage value is to see if that is an alternative.

We had 7 pages of an estimate to fix M2nc's Uly when he ditched in off the Dragon. We ordered necessary parts for a fraction of their estimate and kept on riding. They did total the bike, we chose to buy it back and make the repairs ourselves. That was 31,000 miles ago. Bike still runs and rides great!

For $4.995 there is a X on Criag's List in Ft Myers FL. 11,000 miles. Looks good in pics.

Glad everyone involved in your mishap are OK.

Sorry to hear about your crash, glad all involved are ok.

Have you figured out a cause for the crash? Gravel in the road or something like that?

I agree with the others that if you want to keep the Uly check into buying it back. That list of damaged parts doesn't sound too expensive to source.

I requested the estimate from the HD, but they have'nt faxed it yet. I am not sure I want the hassle of repairing it myself, would rather replace it. Should hear today what the settlement amount is. I still have to provide my list of added accessories and gear to the adjuster (those costs are not insignificant).

To update this thread, I have committed to a 06 X from a fellow BadWebber, hope to go pick it up next weekend.

In the end this was my best option, I got another great bike, this time with hard bags and I stayed within the funds available from the insurance settlement.

Can't wait to get it and put some miles on it.

HRJohn,

Have you kept up on whether you can or intend to buy your old one back from the insurance company for parts/spares?

Just curious. I'd love to have the ability to own a donor.

The logistics of getting the bike outweighed the benefits, seeing that the bike is in TN. Also wanted to maximize my return on the bike, so I let it go.

Change in plans, not getting a bike right now.
