...to the Uly I envisioned! I just got done installing the 9 gearing. Figured while the primary cover is off now would be the best time to get it powder coated. Figured While I'm powder coating, might as well get the tail section done now too...you get the idea! Total list of mods so far: Gloss black primary and cam covers Gloss black tail section City-X wheels City-X hugger and upper belt guard 1125CR Mirrors with signals 1125 LED rear turns Luggage inserts painted frame color (can you tell that I don't like the Magnesium color??) Drummer SS muffler K&N Race ECM Breather re-route (currently venting to the ground, I just got my catch can back from being anodized black....need to mount it up) Poly Grip heaters GPS mount and wiring LEDs in top case for brake Brake light modulator 55W HID Still want to do the following (hopefully this winter): anodized fork uppers black powder coat fork lowers, triple clamps and headlight modules black powder coat pegs, idler pulley bracket and shift/brake levers flat black |

Nope. The bike should have been a 6 speed. |

Andymnelson, that looks great! I have not done a whole lot to mine yet but it is fun to personalize a bike like you did. Nice work! Nice pics also! Great setting. |

Thanks for the comments. I have wanted to do the 9 gearing for a while as well....then came across a BadWebber with a 9 motor he was building to race, so he needed the 12 gearing. We swapped- only cost me shipping and some gaskets Craig- I have actually never wanted a 6-speed personally...just more shifting. I really enjoy the gearing as it is now. Using a 6-speed would have required a ton of R&D $$ to develop a new trans, so it makes sense that they would not do that. What I meant is that, if it made sense on ANY of the air heads, it would be the Uly that should have gotten the 9 gearing. Free for Buell to do, and sets it apart from the other 12 models. I can see why the didn't tho, would make the Uly a faster accelerator than the Firebolt! I very much see your point, and don't intend this to be an argument to it....just clarifying what I meant by my original statement! Ken- I use the CH 2258 bag: http://www.chaseharper.com/Accessories/Accessories .htm It's bigger, cheaper and better quality than the Buell bag! Al- making the bike "mine" is what it's all about for me! I took the pics on a little ride downtown Minneapolis today- beautiful area (Mill Ruins Park). The Stone Arch Bridge in the background of most is actually a walking bridge. The 1 pic that looks the other way has the new 35W bridge that replaced the one that collapsed a couple of years ago. Oh, and Vern- I can make em both light up, but the high beam is just a halogen bulb and it looks silly with both on |

I like the frame and accessory color changes, I was hoping that would be an option in the future of Uly's.....oh well. |

What are your rpms at cruising at 70? Is it a lot different or just a little. (Message edited by Sweetfish89 on September 21, 2010) |

I'll check when I ride this afternoon, but it's 11% lower than stock....so the RPMs are now 11% higher than before. |

Nice mods and nice backdrop! You are doing almost exactly what I've been on-track with for my Uly, 'cept I went for the matte lacquer black on the the engine and tail and stuck with the amber wheels that were on when I picked mine up. Interestingly enough, I also have been pining for a shot with the falls and Stone-Arch bridge. Unfortunately though, my idea has me getting the Uly up onto the bridge, and since it's pedestrian-only I'm a bit concerned about losing access to my bike for a few months while the case progresses. So you don't forget, the Church of the XB9 Primary is having a potluck this weekend--you're on for bringing dessert. |

looks like about 3650RPMs at 70mph in 5th gear. Very nice to be able to pass without downshifting! praise be to the 9. Hah |

Methed - You could always walk your bike up on to the bridge. Andymneison - That ain't that much off from the 12's gearing. |

Yeah it's an 11% difference- so it should be about 400 RPMs higher. Not much, but it really gets the motor into it's happy place more often! |

Now that makes me want to go get the new gearing! It would be much better for in town and on the back roads. |

My mileage didn't change. 45 mpg with both gearings. Prefer the 9 big time. I am with EG above, a 6 speed with an even lower first gear would have been even better. My Cagiva with it's Ducati engine had a six speed and it turned 5000 rpm at 70 mph so it's gearing was much lower yet. Baker makes a 6 speed conversion for the sportster but not for the Buell so I assume there is no room on our bikes or not enough of a market. |

My mileage didn't change. I'm not doubting you, but I'm just curious how that can be possible? I've reduced the ratio on three bikes in the past, and the reduction in fuel economy was always close percentage-wise to the change in the ratio. The more time I spent at sustained highway speeds, the closer the consumption change mirrored the ratio change. Do the rest of you that have made the primary swap also experience the same fuel economy as before? I am really considering the swap since I do take the bike off-pavement; but since moving to Texas, I spend most of my time droning along in a straight line at 80mph. It is really the range I care about more than the economy since stopping to fill up sucks. |

The cams on the Uly are pretty radical. The intake closes pretty late so you don't start making power till 4000 rpm. Once "on the cam" you become more efficient. My mileage is taken at 70 mph where I am now closer to being "on the cam". At 80 mph you would be at 4500 rpm so the difference might be different since at 80 you are already "on the cam" with the 12 gearing so you might see a decrease. The combination of speed, rpm and cam timing will determine your efficiency. |
