I think my Uly stator/VR has finally crapped the bed. : (

IRRC they changed stators in the XB and/or Uly's since they made my 06 Uly. Is there an updated part? Is it any good? Are there different stators to choose from?

I have a new, never used VR "Y0302-02A8" which seems to be an superseded 06 part????

I would really like to use this nice new VR and not have to go buy another.

Can I get an new older stator to work with it? Will a newer revised stator work with the old VR?

Or should I just go with a new version of the stator/VR?

Please advise.

That is too many questions in one post. Are you feeling OK?

I cannot help, sorry. I have not been there yet I think that is because I fixed the "77" connector just before it died. Shit. I probably just put a whammy on myself.

These are the latest part numbers I have, they were collected a while back so not 100% sure if these might even be outdated.

Updated Stator
(new 77 Connector) 29971-02YA

VOLTAGE REGULATOR KIT W/CONNEC Y1302.02A8

VOLTAGE REGULATOR CONNECTOR SE Y1312.02A8
77 connector Service Kit
This is the kit with the replacment connector for both sides.

With some combo of these, pretty you could make it work. When I replaced mine the new connector was not available so I just went the old VR and Stator.

Could also ask Al @ American Sport Bike?

The only difference between the old and new parts is the different "77" connector. Mechanically the two stators and VR's are identical.

Use whatever parts you have, and just cut off the connector and put on something else. The connector service kit is a pain in the ass to install from what I have read on here.

I installed the upgraded "77" connector, and soldered it. It was not really that hard to do. Stuffing everything back in, so the cover fits good is a little bit of a pain. The SM picts are pretty good, but I would take some picts of my own before pulling all the wires apart.

Oh, i forgot to add that I used some No-Ox compound on the connector pins. No-ox is used for electrical connections, usually aluminum wire, and can be found at electrical supply houses.

The deal with the new 77 connector is you're supposed to use some sort of proprietary Bosch tool to crimp the terminals on the end of the wires. Apparently this tool comes with different-sized collets based on the size of the terminals and crimps them very precisely. Crimping the connectors properly is VERY hard to do with a normal automotive wire crimping tool. I fought mine for an hour using a crimper, needle nose pliers, etc. until I got the terminals crimped small enough to fit into the plastic housing properly.

Motorfish has the right idea- if I had it to do over, I'd solder the terminals on the ends of the wires.

I just changed mine a couple of weeks ago. Soldered the new #77 connector set up before crimping.

Do yourself a favor and get an angle grinder or dremel tool and put in a slot on the 4 torx head bolts that hold the stator in place. The bolt head and torx slot are way too small and too shallow to get any kind of torque on them. You'll strip out your torx head wrench in no time and it still won't be tight enough. I had to do this to the existing torx bolts just to get them out.

Poor design.

I have not seen any reason to actually have a "77" connector. What I mean is for the infrequent times it needs to be removed, like when the connector burns up or when replacing the unit, why not just solder the wires together. I eliminated my "77" plug a long time ago, when the plug began showing signs of melting.

It works fine, it cannot come loose and cause a problem melting then shorting the plug. It also saved the cost of a replacement plug kit, as well as the time fiddling with getting the ends to fit. If it needs to come out all I need is a wire cutting device, which I am sure would be on hand if I have to get into changing the stator or other components anyway.

Very good point Vern. Fixes like this also make a lot more sense knowing there aren't going to be dealers to work on the bikes in a few more years. Fix it the way YOU want because YOU'RE going to be the guy re-fixing it later!

Froggy,

"The only difference between the old and new parts is the different "77" connector. Mechanically the two stators and VR's are identical. "

If that is true, then why do I have more nodes on my stator than this fellas ?"

his

mine

What year bike is that? Are you trying to play a trick on me? The first pic is a 2008-2010 stator.

Ah yes, that guy has 08+ 2 phase. I have a 03-07 3 phase. It all makes sense now. Sorry.

Carry on.
