This past Sunday I was headed to a event and four laning it on the Surekill Expressway in Philly. Was about noon... traffic was heavy... was in high speed lane doing about 30-35 mph and roughly 3K rpms. With no warning--- no nothing--- bike just quits in a split second. No noise. Idiot (reserve fuel) light not on.

Got to side of highway and (foolish me) opened fuel cap to look in... saw nothing (duh)... thought must be out of gas and the idiot light did not come on. Kind hearted cager stopped and offered to take me to gas station. got two gals of fuel. Came back put gas in. Still nothing. bike would not start.

Long story short... got it towed to HD\Buell dealer. On Monday the dealer said the fuel pump fuse popped. They put in new fuse and said they checked the harness for pinches or damage. Harness OK.

I asked if any codes came up--- they said no. Service guy said they did all they could with the time alloted to them under warranty.

Go Tuesday and pick up bike. Made it most of the way home--- roughly 20 miles--- and it popped the fuse again. This time I knew to look at the fuse. Had spares. Tried one spare fuse right away-- it popped. Waited close to a half hour tried another--- it popped.

Had called the dealer and told him I was stranded about a mile from my house. Put in a 15 amp fuse instead of 10A and it did start and get me home.

the dealer picked up the bike this morning at my house.

Just wondering isn't there some tests or diagnostics the dealer can do on the fuel pump? Is this a common problem at all with Buell's? I've read BWB for quite a while and cannot recall seeing this problem even mentioned before.

I told the service manager I wanted a new fuel pump.

But I'm curious if they could have done more tests\diagnostics when they first had the bike.

And the icing on the cake on Sunday was that while I was gone to get fuel... someone stole my helmet.

I hope they see the note I left inside:

"Warning: Helmet is infected with head lice."

Blastards.

The only solution is to replace the fuel pump. For some reason the 09's have an issue with the fuel pump overheating in hot weather, especially with a low fuel level. Getting it replaced under warranty will fix the issue. The 2010 models came with a new more robust fuel pump.

I've had two helmets stolen.
One when it was sitting on my bike here at work and another at a bar in town.
You would think I should have learned my lesson the first time.

Would a replacement pump automatically be an 2010 variant? Is there a different part number for the 010 vs 09?

If you have access to the 010 part number I'd appreciate it.

BTW... if Eric ever restarts making bikes again he needs to hire you for customer service and service support!!!

P0130.7AA is the 2010 part number. I don't know if it supersedes the previous part number or not.

Some good news. Both the towing expense as well as the value of the stolen helmet (with no deductible) WILL be covered by my Safeco through HD motorcycle insurance.

Dealership picked up my bike and ordered new fuel pump. Their Buell guy is on vacation for a week so it will be another week or so until I get the bike back. Not a biggie.

I don't think the service guy took too well to my suggesting the 010 pump. I'll look on the receipt when I get the bike back to see which part number was installed.

have (I hope) another year of warranty left... bought the bike in late Oct of last year... and I'm pretty sure it's a 2 year unlimited miles warranty.

the world is looking more cheerful ;=)

Re: build date of my XT. the bike is at the dealer's for repair right now so I don't have access to the OEM\VIN plate on the bike.

Is the build date captured in the serial number? I have that data handy.

It is next to serial number on the frame at steering head. Curious if yours is older or newer than mine. Might just get a 2010 pump for it if we find it fits. Or at least a bigger fuse! Euly

When I get the bike back from the dealer I'll let you know when it was manufactured. At that time I should (might?) be able to tell you if they put in the 010 pump by looking at the part number on the service slip.

Re: fuse size. I don't think you want to increase the fuse sizing. I did just to get myself home (less than 2 miles)... but bigger size fuse is not a long term solution.

So, the moral of the story for all of us with 09's is to carry a stack of spare fuses just in case?

Curious if there was any indication before hand? I only because yesterday, once at start up for the day when the bike was cold, mine made a funny dragging noise when I turned the key. My first thought was, "damn, that fuel pump doesn't sound good at all.." It started fine, but...

Jim, just last week mine started making that noise, not every morning but a few times and only when it was cold. I figured it was about to give me trouble.

Well, that's discouraging. I'll have to keep a spare fuse in my back pocket now! I'm familiar with the Sure-Kill expressway having grown up in NE Philly and then Conshohocken. I'll be there Saturday for a visit and headed from the airport straight to Dalessandro's for a cheesesteak.

Bike stalled 6 times coming to a stop yesterday. Feels like the bike cuts down to about 900 rpms as the engine is winding down from engine braking and regular braking. Is this fuel pump or TPS reset.

Just got my 09 Uly XT back from the dealer today.

They installed a new pump--- part number P0130.5AA and "update calibration to newer calibration".

So it's not the 010 part number that Froggy posted. I had sent the dealer an email with the info Froggy posted but the dealer said that this was the part that HD was sending for the warranty work and that they had no control or choice in selection of the part.

Let's see how it goes--- I still (thankfully) have a year of warranty left.
At least this time I made it home without popping any fuses but it wasn't hot out either.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Try a TPS reset After the bike has warmed up. Take it for a ride first if you can. It can't hurt anything.
