I ordered the Erik Buell Racing ECM for my 2008 Uly with stock exhaust and K&N air cleaner. Did a little ride on Saturday. Here are the things I notices:

* RPM goes to 1,500 when first started.
* No stumble when starting out
* Very smooth power all the way along the throttle positions
* RPM comes down to 900 - 1,000 once warmed up
* It has the 2010 fan program (fan comes on at low speed, and rarely comes on when shutting the bike down.)
* I did a spirited ride up across the high country and back down (9,000 feet), averaged 51 MPG, which is similar to stock. Will be interested to see what it averages over a range of altitudes.

I am very pleased with the upgrade.

That is my set up also. Wonder if the ECM would get me close to 51mpg. I average 37mpg best I have ever got was 42mpg for one tank.

I know the one for my '06 (similar setup, but no comfort kit logic) has also been netting me OEM fuel mileage over the last 3k miles or so, in addition to being super-smooth and just all-around happy.

My normal fuel consumption is in the mid 40's, but I often hit 50 plus when riding in the high country here in Colorado. My lifetime fuel consumption is 43.9 MPG over the 30,777 miles of commuting to touring. I'll be tracking to see what the MPG averages out over the next months with the new ECM and will let you know.

After installing the ECM I got 48 on the first tank. That's up about 5mpg. All of that was highway at 60 - 75mph.

I don't pay attention to the mileage but I have to agree about the ECM. HCHD put one in my 08 (Jardine exhaust) and the thing runs like somebody put in a whole new motor. It even got rid of the popping on deceleration. Great stuff.

I ordered one for my 2008 Uly with the "best drive calibration for a stock muffler" and the 08-09 fan strategy. Should arrive tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Metra6924, Let us know.

I am curious that you said you are getting the 08-09 fan strategy. I am assuming this is different from what I received which is the 2010 fan logic. In a brief e-mail exchange with tech I questioned that the fan does not come on when you shut down. I was informed that this is the new logic. Sort of goes against all that we had heard about the fan coming on at shutdown to keep the rear cylinder from coking.

My 09 XT recently had the new firmware updated (not Erik Buell Racing) and the fan still usually comes on at shutdown, albeit at lower rpm and for less time. I'm in the UK as well - ie. not hot. : )

"Sort of goes against all that we had heard about the fan coming on at shutdown to keep the rear cylinder from coking."

Cpilot, I think that is called marketing, take a design flaw and make it sound desirable.

Because it isn't possible to cool down the rear cylinder enough while riding that the fan wouldn't be needed as much after shut down?

Does anyone think that the whole 2 mins that fan runs after you shut down really makes a difference as you've been riding it for the last hour? Or even 30 mins. I don't. I figure the dang fan would run for eternity until the heat sensor completely cooled down or the battery died. Thus they put a 2 min. timer on it. I find it annoying. When/if I get the Erik Buell Racing ECM, I'm going to ask that they deprogram that thing to shut the fan off when the bike shuts off.

Uly_dude I think you are correct about how much temperature difference the fan made on shutdown. On the new ECM it comes programed to shut the fan off anytime you are under a certain speed (15 mph???) or when you shut the bike off. It is taking me some getting use to the idea. I am so use to hearing the fan run at shut down. Now what am I going to do without all those comments about a noisy fan running after shutdown?? My normal line was, "Oh, that is my flux generator." Now I will have no conversation point...... Shoot, now you can even hear the birds sing after you turn the key off (or the sound of your fuel boiling).

Just to reiterate I really like the improvements of the drive-ability!

Well, I installed the new ECM tonight and went for a short ride. It's just like Cpilot said above, except for the fan. Mine works just like the original, it comes on at shutdown. Ordering instruction were "best drive calibration for stock muffler, '09 fan strategy". The throttle response is silky smooth, no surprises. It fired up right away, idled at 1500 for a few minutes, then settled into a rock steady idle just over 1000. Cruising around town, I ran a gear higher just to see what would happen. A steady cruise at 2000rpm without surging is now possible. From a dead stop, acceleration was smooth even in heavy, slow moving traffic. Crank it up from 2000 and it just GOES. I got the impression that a 2nd gear power wheelie is not out of the question. I didn't have much of a chance to check, but I didn't notice any flat spots up to 4000. I did notice a reduction in engine braking, but the benefit is smooth deceleration, unlike the on-off switch I had before. When I got back I checked the oil temperature. I expected something near or above 200 and was surprised that it was only 180. Not bad considering the outside temperature and all the stop and go traffic. As information, the only mods I have are the comfort kit. I'll have more information and fuel economy Sunday night.

Tim

By the way, no deceleration popping either.

Well, 360 miles or so later, my comments above still apply. Acceleration through 5500rpm (not sure when I shifted, may have been around 6500) revealed no flat spots. There was some barely noticeable decel popping coming down a steep grade, but I consider it an extreme condition and am not at all bothered by it. Fuel economy is the best I have seen on this bike: 53mpg at highway speeds. Previously it was in the 45mpg range. I expected a decrease, not increase! Outside air temp today is 85 degrees. Oil temp on arrival was 175. Just my observations from the field.

Yesterday was a beautiful day in Colorado. Did a about 250 miles two-up through the high country. Made 55.6 mpg on my first fill-up, the highest I have made. The bike ran incredible! Wow am I impressed with how well the new ECM has transformed my Uly.

Dirty rotten this is what I've been waiting to hear. Better MPG, No fan at off, higher start up idle till warm, smooth at 2000 cruising. I hate spending money!

Everyone seems to be having the same result that I got. Huge improvement overall in every way. This is one impressive little gadget. I'm still wondering why these ECMs weren't set that way from the factory. EPA???

For those of you who ordered one of the race ecm's do you just e-mail ebr and tell them what you have on your bike (mines stock) and they send the correct ecm? Can I choose the fan cycle program?

Rwcfrank, that's pretty much what you do. Give them the year and what airfilter and exhaust you are running. I bought one back in January I believe. I had some issues with the idle at start up cycling up and down. Erik Buell Racing had me send it back to them and reflashed it with their latest version. This was done at no charge to me other than shipping one way. The idle is higher at initial cold start up but settles down as soon as the motor warms up. Like everyone else says, no more stumbling at lower rpms, nice smooth power curve, new fan arrangement.

I started laying the ground work earlier, "Honey my bike is stumbling and running rough at 2000 rpm. The guys on Badweb suggested the Erik Buell Racing ECM. They said it made the bike run like a dream." I mentioned that it cost 250 softly. There is a reason I never say anything bad about her purse or hat collection. $25.00 a week puts me at the end of Oct. Time to have a yard sale.

My ECM is cracked on my 09 Uly, under warranty but I wonder if I can work something out with Erik Buell Racing?
