Well here I sit. All of So CA's Buell riders are probably up at Newcomb Ranch partying with Erik and company and I'm at home. Left about 1030 from San Bernardino via the 210 freeway to make some time. Didn't get 20 miles before skip-spark kicked in.

WTH? Bike wasn't pinging and it wasn't even that hot outside yet, although it's pushing 100deg now. Limped it to La Canada and Hwy 2 to gas up figuring I could take it easy from there on up the hill. Friggin 2 was closed to the Ranch. Talked to a couple other riders there one told me how to get around via Angeles Forest Hwy, must have been some sort of miscomm since I ended up in Canyon Country at the 14...

Since I needed to be home by 3:00 I thought I'd try to hit Angeles Forest Hwy from the back side and I could still get up there and meet The Man. Plodding along at 60-65 with the bike SS'ing when it wanted to I found the Angeles Forest Hwy "closed to Angeles Crest" at Palmdale. With the envelope closing I tip-toed east on the 138 trying to figure a way up to the Crest, while a friggin Bounder pusher outran me on the level straights...ran out of time...

Friggin skip-spark, friggin bankrupt State of CA not being able to fix its roads in a timely manner. Sorry for the rant but I'm bummed.

Try checking your spark plug wires, especially at the coil.

Thanks for the advice guys, but it was ECM-triggered s/s. Bike has 72K, guess I need to get in there.

This didn't help, at all:

X,

People that don't have the Skip Spark BS problem just don't get it.

I understand.

The Etennuly fan switch solution works as a Band-Aid, but I don't think there is a "cure" yet.

I'm so happy with my band-aid I am afraid of a cure! Damn thing has been doing fine with the switch.

I have only forgotten to turn the fan off once, running twenty plus minutes did not bother the battery at all.

So far it is..... !

Xbimmer,

While I can't help with the diagnosis, I certainly know how you feel with a broken bike canceling your trip to a rally.

Good luck with it.

Xbimmer - Try an experiment for me. Pull the fan fuse and see if the problem goes away.

I ran mine while hooked up to VDSTS. It showed the fan on temp to actually be at 490F. That, according to what I can find out, is way too hot for the on temperature.

I believe on should be at 430F and actual over heat should be at 460F if I was reading it correctly. That puts me at 30F beyond over heat when my fan starts. It seems to cut out at about 490F also. This is after replacing the ETS, ECM, fixing several wires and grounds.

Has anyone suffering skip spark got the comfort kit and new fan logic?

I'm running an axtell 88" kit, so it may just run hot naturally, but I would love to fix this damn skip spark. Never had a problem back in MI...

I believe I have the Skip spark problem on my 2008, with the new Comfort kit and ECM flash.

after riding the bike for a while it will usually start to skip and cut.

I tried pulling out the fan fuse. That made things better in that the cuts and skips were shorter and faster so the bike dove forward less when is skipped, but eventually I still ended up running on only 1 cyclinder, with WOT only going 120 in 5th gear.

My '06 has the comfort kit.

The trick to this problem is that all of the fixes became temporary, until I installed the fan manual overriding switch. I would go out to ride and it would do it every time out. I fix one item and it was healed. I could ride it several trips no problem, in about five hundred miles it would come back. Somehow it re-learned the problem. I would fix or change something else, the same program would happen, all was well, temporarily, then the problem came back just as it was. It was like an evil Borg was finding ways to cancel my fixes.

Odd, eh?

I tried pulling out the fan fuse.

Thanks for trying that for me. The fact that it did not completely cure your problem shoots holes in my theory.

Hmm, It will throw the CEL with your manual override switch right?

I hate having that damned thing on... I'm wondering if it is partly because of my engine temp sensor, which has had the outer braiding worn off.

Darth,
I replaced my Temp Sensor trying to fix the S/S issue. The outer braiding was worn too. Replacing the Sensor didn't resolve the issue. I installed the Override switch and can live with the CEL light for now.

Jlnance,

I don't think that your theory (ECM ground shift)is full of holes yet.

Mattmcc00 pulled the fan fuse (something that you can do without disturbing other electrical connections)and made a noticeable difference. Matt maybe having other ground or connection issues. This could explain Etennuly's odd "re-learned" behavior.

I too would like to see Xbimmer try your experiment.

Xbimmer - How about it???

some further info on the bike.

I noticed that the spark plugs were 10R12A instead of the specified 10R12X. So I changed them for the X variety.

Also, I noticed that the inside of my rear cylinder spark plug wire was full of rust. I use the buell tool kit screw driver without any heads and a piece of cloth to wipe most of it off.

I also took the battery out and bent the metal pan so as to lower the ECM, and I shaved off the underside of the seat where it was touching the ECM.

I then noticed oil on my airbox...

Maybe I should post this in a new thread.

Matt, I commented on your other post but I think you need to cap that vacuum port you pictured. That should help a lot. The amount of unmetered air getting in will make her run lean which will cause more heat and possibly go into skip spark.
