I have about 4200 miles on my 08 XT with the stock Diablo Strada tires. The tread on the rear appears to be getting quite squared off. Can I actually run the tire down to the tread wear indicators closest to the center of the tire without hitting the cords? Are the TWI's only useful if the tread is worn off evenly across the entire tread surface?

I have a 3 day, 800 mile trip planned for this weekend and would like to know if it will go that far? Thanks.

do you have flat spot in the center of your tires? and are the wear bars even with the tread wear. If so be careful if it rains during your trip and get the tires replaced when you can so you don't have any pucker moments

If you are concerned it may be worth your piece of mind to get the tire changed prior to your trip.

The tread pattern has a slick spot up the middle that makes judging when the tire is toasted very hard.I used a few Diablos & always was suprised how thin the carcass felt in the middle.I always changed the tire when I got to the wear bars closest to the middle of the tire.

Guys, I am NOT down to the wear bars closest to the center yet but I have about 1/8 to 3/16" left before I get there.

And yes, Babired, it does have a flatter area in the center of the tread, only on the rear tire. The front almost looks like new yet.

I know I will need a tire fairly soon but I just hate to throw away a tire that may actually have another 1500 miles left on it.
I wonder how thick the rubber is in the center of a brand new Strada? When I do replace the tire, I plan to cut a section out of the middle to take a look and see what I actually have left.

I like things done right but can also be a cheapskate at times. Thanks to all.

I just saw a photo of a Diablo down to the belts in the middle and I'd say that if you have worn the tire down to where you cant see the tread converging anymore than the belts are soon to follow. If you have another 1/8" to go before you are at the wear bars, I would'nt worry about it. I would be looking a ordering a tire in the near future.

you got a flat spot which is premature tire wear. I would go on the trip if I was a solo rider but if you have a passenger I would get the tire changed. Your traction reserve is limited on the flat spot on slippery surfaces or any side, braking or accelerating forces. and the flatter it gets in the middle the more feedback you will get from the bike when you are going into a lean. 800 isn't really much, just be careful. The flip side is you get a new tire and you have to ruff it in to get rid on the wax or whatever the tire maker has on it.

I will be solo on this trip. This ride is with my four brothers and although we are competitive, we ride somewhat sensibly. We will be on mostly 2 lane blacktop roads with about 75 miles of slab.

I have never had any problems telling when my other bike tires were worn out but this tire never has had any tread grooves across the center so I am finding it difficult to determine the thickness of the rubber in the center of the tire. Thanks you all for your replies!

Yamafreak, how many miles are on that tire and also, is the tire worn down to the tread wear indicators that are closest to the center of the tire? Thanks.

One of the reasons I HATE the Stradas.

Is it too much to put some wear bars into the tread pattern?

Really?

My 08 XT has the stock Pirelli Diablo Stradas on it. This tire has tread wear indicators on it. If you look at the edge of the tire you will see a small "TWI" molded into the rubber in 4 places. Find a "TWI" and follow it across the tread. Look into the groove and you will see a small hump in the rubber. This is your tread wear indicator. They are very small and since they have a rounded edge, are hard to spot. If you run a screwdriver blade in the groove in the tread, you can actually feel the twi more than you can see it. Thanks.
