I'm about to tear into my primary to swap to 9 gearing (and PC the primary cover gloss black!). Should i just pony up the $25 for a primary locking bar, or make my own?

Where's that thread with dimensions??

For $25 I'd just order it and be done with it, but thats just me.

Looks like a piece of aluminum bar chamfered at each end and placed between the 2 gears?

Yup, but with 240 ft/pounds of torque on it...it had BETTER be the right size and shape!

+1 what to what Andy said, because (a) you damn sure don't want it to snap or fold up when you get up to 239 ft-lbs on your torque wrench, and (b) you'd REALLY hate to booger up the teeth on your primary sprocket or clutch sprocket.

I would build one out of 1/4" angle aluminum. That would be more than strong enough in compression.

I won't argue with anyone ordering it, especially if you are getting parts anyway. But the first time I had to use one (circa 2000) on my M2, I just ran over to the scrap pile, found a piece of aluminum channel bar, pounded it flat, and hacksawed it to length.

I've used it a bunch of times since, and it worked fine.

Given it's aluminum on steel teeth, if you use the right material, I don't think it could ever hurt anything unless you forget to take it out and start up the motor...

I made my own and used it on my 2000 M2, still have it somewhere.

I made my own out of aluminum stock I had. The length does not have to be exact.

The sportster guys just use a 4" brass hinge. (make sure it's really brass and not just brass plated!)

I made one out of 3/16" stainless. It's 4" long. Just radius the edges. Stainless is soft compared to sprocket teeth. Worked great. You'll love the gearing change, it wakes your bike right up!
