I have an 08 Uly and looking for help with finding a rack/topcase mounting setup for my bike. Would like to find the best deal price wise I can. Don't have a specific topcase yet, but thinking about Givi or maybe a stock Buell one if I run across one. I've seen the one on Twistedthrottle.com for $159.99 (http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/3 745/474/ ) that looks good, but just wanted to check with you guys and see if there are any better options out there.

I did some searching and came across a few bookmarked threads when I was looking at an '07 w/o luggage. Here's what I found (I ended up buying an '07 with cases):

http://www.happy-trail.com/

I don't know that much in the rack dept. exists for less than about a buck-n-a-quarter so $160 for Givi doesn't seem so astronomical if the fit and load capacity is proper and generous, respectively. Its how much time you want/can afford to spend on designing and fabricating something to work with a lower out of pocket cost vs. how much a complete product sells for.

I'm always weighing that equation as an eternal tinkerer

I just got my Buell rack for the top case a week or so ago. I will try to post details later this evening.

Here are all of the Buell parts needed for the buell mounting rack. You only "need" the two mounting rack pieces (#2 and #3) - the nuts, bolts, and washer you can get at a hardware store much cheaper. This will get you the rack that "should" work with any Hepco Becker topcase. I have an outdoorsman topcase and I know others have interchanged the outdoorsman case with the journey case so those two at a minimum should work with this rack.

Do you have the side case racks mounted? You don't want to mount a top case without at least the sidecase racks because they provide support for the subframe which is needed for the extra weight of the topcase.

Also, be prepared to wait. I ordered this stuff in March or April and did not get it until last week. You might be lucky though because the box the top rack came in (which is what I was waiting for) had "qty 10" written in sharpie on the box so maybe Hepco shipped a few extras to HD.

I used the hepco-brkar TK50 for a great top case with 50l of space, fits 2 fullface helmet plus a jacket, and best of all It mounts on the stock mounting rack.

Remember, you MUST MUST MUST have side racks before you mount the top rack. The subframe WILL BRAKE if you mount a top rack and case with no side racks!

Buell warns of it, and I seen it with my own eyes!

Thanks for the heads up about the side racks Mike. Didn't realize that & glad I found out before it was too late.

Not to disagree...... but I have had the twisted throttle top rack on without any side racks. No issues... that includes one low side last year....

If the Buell OEM stuff is getting hard to find, try ordering from Hepco-Becker direct. Yes, all the H-B cases fit all the racks, except for the old Krauser look alike stuff.

Gamdh- I think Mike was talking about the OEM top case not the Fehling one... as I too ran it solo for 2+ years with no problem but they are built and bolt on different...

plus this might clear thing up for others....

to my knowledge there are only a few you can run solo topcase racks from...Fehling is the one I choose, not cheap but none are... you get what you pay for and I was happy while I had it..

Cheers-pete

I have the Twisted Throttle top case rack on my '07 with no side bags or racks. I rode the bike to Alaska and back, around 400 miles of gravel too. I have had no issues in 10,000 miles with my subframe.

If I had not bought the XT, I would go with a sears topcase. Unless you want to be able to put two helmets in it. Bang for buck is very high.

Now, that said. Money aside, the Buell/Hepco outdoorsman topcase is what I'd love to have. Got a great deal on the XT and am grateful, but would have gone with the XP if I had a choice. I like the outdoors man cases better. The side one's don't stick so far out.
