The Uly is running better than ever. Better mpg, and it seems more power. I've got 14k plus on the clock, and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong ...

Except it's making more noise. It sounds like some sort of lifter tap / tick. The sound is more pronounced at higher rpms. I can hear it fairly well, if while going down the road I pull in the clutch, as I slow down and the wind noise goes away. Once stopped, I can still hear it, just not loud or frequent.

I have 3 days left on warranty and live 150 miles from a dealer. I'd like to know if this sound is common once the motor is broken in or not. I'm I being paranoid?

I've read the motors are fairly bullet proof, and have had no issue so far. Couple fouled plugs,I pass to blipping while cold, my bad, and a couple TPS resets. Really, the bike has been great. No problems or failures, minus a chin fairing bolt coming off, and loose turn signal stalks.

Well, they do sound like a box of rocks most of the time. I was concerned about mine a couple of times but decided to ignore it and see how far it goes- 82,000 miles so far, and it was running perfect right up to the time the throttle shaft broke. Now it doesn't make any noise
My advice- unless you hear something solid and very metallic, ride it.

Mine is the same. Around 12,000 mile or so I became concerned about excessive engine noise.
I spoke to a close personal friend who's vast knowledge and wisdom always proves true blue.
he said quite simply," yeah these things always sound like two skeletons f**king in a tin can. It's perfectly normal just ride the piss out of it! Change the oil at it's usual interval.
at 100,000 or so think about maybe a rebuild or sumthin' "

Thanks guys. I get paranoid. I don't have any other buell riders around here. One or two about 60 miles away. If I did, and I heard the same thing on their bikes, it would be easier to dismiss.

I have a friend with a HD lowrider 2008 with the HD synthetic and we asked a mechanic about it. And he said its normal if you are running synthetic oil in it.

Babired,

I was told the same thing by an HD Service dept...the synthetic oil causes the hydraulic lifters to make that noise. I don't really understand why though.

me neither but I do hear the tick in my friends HD. I use regular 20 50 in my bikes and just change it every 2,500 miles, no ticking with the regular oil!

Is it ticking or is it pinging off of acceleration? There are threads here regarding the knocking and pinging that can really damage an engine. It may be the static timing. Mine is making an awful noise right now and I'm just about to pick up the book and ECM Spy to see if I can retard the timing a tad. Check it out...http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/584412.html?1281033314

Harley V twins make a lot of noise. Thats why they hide it with the loud pipes.

Yes, mine sounds like its full of loose gravel too...My 96 Triumph Speed Triple was worse. The D&D cans on that pretty much masked it...

Noisy engines are happy engines...

There is a lot of fin ringing and lifter noise.

This is what I use to counter measure the noise... works for wind noise too. :-)
