So I'm riding the Uly on Saturday, and I take a turn I've never taken to see where the road went. After about 7 miles, I find that the pavement ends, and dirt begins, (yay!) but the dirt was gated (boo!) As I approach the end, I see a guy standing next to a bike. As I pull up, I see it's a Blast. Both the Blast and the rider look like they've been ridden hard and put away wet. The rider is some old dude, had to be mid-70s, smoking a Pall Mall (I didn't know they even made those anymore). The Blast is a 2000, with more duct tape, bubble gum, bailing twine, and 'field engineered repairs' than anything I've ever seen. It had 43K miles on it. Let me repeat that: 43K on a 2000 Blast. And it was still running! Sure, he said he was having problems finding front brake pads (I referred him to American Sport Bike), he said he'd gone through a few belts (but had a spare one strapped to the back of the seat). I was blown away. Here's a guy who never heard of badweb or ADVRider, couldn't give a crap about what people thought of the latest new bike entry from Ducati or Triumph, he just rode the crap out of his bike and fixed it when it needed it. Someday I want to be that guy. |

I love those guys. Met a gal is her 60's this summer from England that was riding a pedal bike across the U.S. |

In 7 years, we'll all have duct tape on our bikes. |

My friend will turn 78 at Sturgis next week. He's riding his 97 Ultra up from Georgia on Thursday and then we will ride to Sturgis and beyond for two weeks. He's like the energizer bunny and truly my mentor!! |
