Just finished a cross country ten thousand mile trip on the 08 ULY..cross Canada that would be. This machine did not miss a beat. But for new front tire in Winnipeg..they were awesome at the harley shop there, a new back in Moncton on the way back..they were also great, but could not figure out the mystery of a seemingly blown neutral light module. This bike was awesome. The guys at Pembroke disconnected the neutral light, it ran much better, the mix was better..but hardly a problem.
Just wanted to post a positive take on this amazing machine.
Having said that, I likely will look for something different next season. I am coming up to the sixty thousand k warranty. I have found that though the dealers that still fly the flag are great, there is things beyond their control, and the service and parts is going to be harder and harder to get while on the road. I am a high mileage guy, and just don't like the feeling of abandonment that Harley has forced upon us. It is not the remaining dealers fault, they have all been great.
This is an amazing machine.
so, what should I as for an 08, 60 thou plus k's..sorry guys..

That's going to be really hard to sell... Great that it made it so far, but you are looking at a rebuild soon enough.

It would be a great hobby project for somebody... but the price would have to be low for it to make sense.

I scored a great deal on a Uly with 10k, but before then I would have been interested if it was going for from $2000 to $3000. Worst cases... I'd figure the $2500 purchase price, $2000 for a professional soup to nuts engine rebuild, $1500 for "other stuff", and I'd have a decent and interesting bike tuned nicely for what my goals are.

you are looking at a rebuild soon enough.

Well 60,000 km is equal to about 37,000 miles and change. Rather premature for a rebuild. Many things have failed on my bike, but the engine is going strong at 73,000 plus miles and I don't envision any engine work any time soon. I have owned several motorcyles that I put over 100,000 miles on without any engine rebuilds. That said, you will probably have to ask a lower price when competing against the glut of low mileage Buells out there.}

Cool. The dealer issues will be had with just about any brand. My dealings with Suzuki over the last 10 years is nothing less than a pile of shit! Most Zuk dealers have very few parts on hand from even spark plugs to valve shims. They have to order every freaking thing. They do stock some dirt bike and 4 wheeler parts but not bike parts. HD is probably one of the best rides to have break because SO MANY dealers and independents can work on them and stock many parts. If I busted the Strom on a trip I would be hard pressed to fix it that day or even in three days.

In the past 10 years having put over 100,000 miles on my two zukes, HARD miles, Thankfully all those have been mostly trouble free!

On one trip a Valk busted a throttle cable to his cruise control, Durango Colorado was 50 miles away. The bike was ridden with a finger stuffed in the motor for a throttle and the dealer 20 minutes before closing stayed 2 hours late and fixed it. No parts were needed since it was the add on cruise, the OEM cable was re routed and the bike was fine sept no cruise. I think even Honda is in the same boat with cost cutting.

Best thing for any bike owner is a good forum and a cell phone and knowlage of his or her bike. Press on with the miles till it stops being fun and reliable, any bike.........

MY kid works at a multi brand shop. It seems they have no parts either. I changed oil on Basement Bobbies CanOTuna and we stopped there to get an oil plug washer(aluminum) and they told us to get lost, so we went to the service department and raided the Aprilla specialty tool drawer and got one. It is just silly to not have stuff like that laying around. I mean keeping them with the oil filters and pushing them on the customers for a buck.

I agree with Dirt. 60K does not mean rebuild time.....whoever told you that has rocks for brains. 100K and maybe if it wasn't serviced regular. I pulled the jugs on my 01S3T to change out the leaking base gaskets at 40K and the honeing marks were still looking good. Great compression and no oil usage. I use DINO! My Uly has 42K with great compression and no oil usage.
I don't baby mine either. My maintenance is stellar.
I guess you guys expect us to give our bikes away. I posted a while back to sell my Uly for 3 grand and only had one bite that backpeddaled after reading this forum.
F#*k all I don't believe some of the CRAP I read on here.

Hey, thanks for reading, I just wanted to post a positive about our bike on this page, as there as BC Steve said, so much crap here.
The bike but for the Neutral Module ran awesome. It did seem to effect the operation. As it seems the computer was mixing the fuel for neutral not speed. Once the light was unhooked that seemed to help that. The computer knew it was going. Only thing is I have to start it with the clutch in. No big deal.
As for the engine rebuild suggestion, I think that suggestion was just being made by the dealer to take advantage of any warranty that was available as mine is up in this coming april..april 011..might take them up on that.
As for keeping, as a second bike....totally can do that, and might. I realize though I have been current on all services it will fetch very little dough. Someone with a like machine could buy it for parts I reckon.
I do love this machine, it is an awesome bike for sure..BUT..I might try Jap next..Concours..whaahoooo...but do think seriously of another hardley..as someone said here..there are dealers and aftermarket guys everywhere..they are just accessable..and has anyone rode that new 1200 Sportster..the one they made for europe and brought here..Exhaust comes up the side like the scrambler..what a fun machine that is..wow...actually feels abit like the buelly..no, really...
thanks for reading guys...
