I just bought a 2008 XB12X the bike has; 7500 miles, a Hawk pipe and a K&N filter. It accelerates clean & strong to the rev limiter @ 7100, but when you let off the gas it gives a series of small pops or back-fires. The seller said they all do that & the ECM on the 2008 is self adjusting. Well, I bought the bike but not his whole story. I have read the blogs of many that have had popping problems, some have re-programed their ECM multiple times with only temporary success. I am hoping that someone that has fixed this problem could recommend best way for me to fix my problem permanently.

I also have a Rhino 700 that had a similar problem of small backfires when using compression breaking going down hills that started after I put a new Muzzy duel exhaust, MSM fuel control & an open type K&N filter system. That problem was fixed by putting the stock airbox back in. Apparently to much air was available & the ecm metered to much fuel.

I wonder if a little air restriction would help my Ulysses?

Any of the straight through pipes can produce a decel pop or crackling sound. With ecm spy you can program the ecm to turn off the fuel on decel; that might fix the pop...

There's a reason the stock can has packing on the end covers and a labyrinth path for the exhaust to follow.

I tried numerous fixes with the ECM on my 07 after I got my drummer. Could not get rid of the decel popping working only with the ECM. Then I tried my baffle with multiple plates (no longer made) and found a plate which still allowed good performance but prevented the decel popping. I am sure some kind of baffle would help you if you are up to try that route.

My 09 XT started popping on deceleration in 1st and 2nd following the latest firmware update. I quite like it - sounds menacing. : )

Popping on decel either means your bike is running lean or you have an exhaust leak. Hold a piece of tissue paper next to the header flanges while the bike's running, and see if it flutters. If not, it's a lean condition created by the pipe, and you'll need to remap the ECM (or rather get a race ECM for an 08 since there's no ECMSpy) to fix it.
