This noob I know is going to attempt to remove the rear wheel for the 1st time. He says he has read the manual and other threads on Bad Weather related to removing the wheel and has decided to take others advice by only removing the axle, as opposed to removing everything the manual suggests. What is he likely to screw up by doing it this way? Any advice would be appreciated.

Tell him to at least remove the brake caliper and tie it up and out of the way. That is the one thing that can and will get screwed up when putting the wheel back on. It's no big deal, either. Just 2 bolts.

Well, you...er.. uh.. your friend might consider removing the fender to make it easier.

I just installed a 2010 rear wheel and all I removed was the brake caliper and lower belt guard.
Oh, don't forget to remove the axle pinch bolt! And, be careful not to kink, bend or twist the belt...

A motorcycle jack, with a muffler cradle, to raise the bike, makes it easier to do the job.

All my friend has at his disposal is a scissor jack. He was planning on chocking the front tire and then lifting just the back wheel with the jack. Anyone else tried this?

Jack works fine - just put small piece of wood or rubber between jack & muffler and aim for rear triangle on muffler. The kickstand & front wheel are the 2nd & 3rd leg of tripod. Dont need to jack more than 1/2" off ground. Removing lower belt guard (2 # 27 torx screws) is helpfull too. +1 on removing caliper! While down there may as well remove, clean and lightly lube, caliper pins - they are supposed to 'float'.

Thanks for the help, when my, I mean his tire arrives, I'll let you know how it goes. FWIW, he decided to go with a Shinko Raven.

Not a bad tire; got just under 10k miles on a set.
Grip was more than good for me. But I don't ride crazy fast corners nor in the rain...

rear & front tire @ about 9800 miles

Got the Shinko put on today. Removed nothing but the lower belt guard and rear brake caliper. I had a little trouble getting the belt back on but other than that, all went smoothly. My local shop charged me $15 to mount the new tire to the rim.
Now if I can make it a thousand miles without the rear bearings failing I will consider it a success. I hope I don't regret going with a $20 torque wrench.
