Hey guys and gals, have been reading the posts the last few months about some people stating their Ulysses were wobbling or swimming heading down the road. I am having the same issue. I'll give ya a little history on my 09 X. I bought it used with 1400 miles on it. I currently have 6800 miles on it now. I have the journey side bags but not the top case. When I first got it, I had a clunk in the front end which I posted about and got some suggestions from ya guys on what to check. I retorqued the steering head and that took care of the issue. Since then I have had no issue's until the recent wobbling issue that has started.

I have recently set the suspension up for my wight class (I weigh 185 lbs with all my gear on). I have some cupping on the front and back tires. Not sure if that could be causing it. They are the original tires with some life left on them. I maybe got about 1500 miles or so left on them. I am not sure if I am getting unwanted vibrations going through the frame causing this, but if I pull in the clutch going down the road I still feel the wobble with the engine at idle. It is not as bad but it is there. It almost feels like the bike is dancing around or like you are driving on a grooved road that is under construction.

At speeds around 40-55 it is hard some times to keep my line. I have took my hands of the bars and the bike does go straight but sometimes wants to go slight right. Speeds from 60-80 the bike just dances around the whole time. I have tried sitting forward more and farther back with now change. I was concerned that maybe I have bad head bearings since the steering head was loose at such a low mileage, but I figured would ask ya guys what you guys thought. I am not sure if front or rear wheel bearings that are bad could cause this but I am not sure. Should I take the side cases off and see if that stops the wobbling? I would think that would not be an issue but just looking for ideas as I am scratching my head wondering what would be causing this issue.

Tires that are cupped can cause alot of problems. I just changed out the tires on my XT and the wobble that I felt at turn-in is gone, it just rolls right in.

I got the bike at 2500 miles and the tires were already cupped.

I think the cupping comes from riding with too low of air pressure.

I have always kept the tires at 34 front and 36 rear but recently from some posts on this I have raised the pressure to 36 front 38 rear. Maybe the tires could be the issue??

I developed an irritating wobble as the OEM tires wore. When I went to pull the wheels to change out the rubber I was missing the pinch bolts in the front fork that keeps the axle from floating, ties the forks together and makes the whole thing rigid. Check and make sure the bolts are in and the axle is tight. Then go buy new rubber.

Alright I guess it's time for some new rubber. Should I stick with the Synch's or do ya guys recommend something else. I mainly ride street. A few times a year I do hit up some trails, mainly dirt and gravel. Would a street tire be better or stay with what I have now?

Tires. I have chewed up my rear tires twice in 4000 miles now. The sync went 1900 and the angle lasted 2200 before the center decentigrated to the cords. I still have the angle on the front but now have the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 190, 55, 17 rear and it seems to be doing good. Others here like the Scorpion as well.

My riding buddy has Pilot Road 2 on his Sv 1000 and gets 10,000 from his rear. When he pulled if off we looked at it and it has a decent and thick carcus even worn out. My angle was like the sync and real thin, prone to puncture. So raod only tires I would look at the Pilot Road 2, many here run that and like it. Next?

Get the tire with the tread pattern design you like best. You'll be glad you did....

Pilot Road 2s have been excellent to me. Easily twice the mileage I've gotten with anything else. They really suck on Georgia Red Clay though... ask me how I know.

Ok so I got the PR2's and they are nice. But I am still having the wobble issue. It seems to be getting worse and quite frankly, I am getting nervous to ride. I am also now getting a vibration in my handle bars at 3200-3600 rpm range. It almost seems like the vibration I feel is related to the wobble since most of my riding when the wobble occurs, is in those RPM ranges. Could it be the front isolater or the head bearings? I inspected the isolator and didn't see any obvious signs of damage. I did not remove it to inspect it though. I have had to retorque my steering head several times this year due to a small clunk over large bumps, and lately the handle bars seem to turn with out much effort while I am stationary. I also have setup the suspension to my weight class. I am a small guy weighing around 145. I setup the suspension to 200 lbs for my weight and all my gear. I have made an appointment with the dealer. Don't really want to take it there, but I am at a loss as to what it could be. I have read other posts about this issue but there is never a resolution in those threads. Any suggestions?
