Well I installed the final piece of a comfort kit on My XT and did it just like the instructions said, a major pain in the ass to prevent a hot one! All was going fairly well until the nut holding one side of the ECM which I duct taped into place while the seat pan was removed fell out! I guess the tape didn't hold it very well. I am not going to tear it all appart for one stinkin' nut and I trid several attempts between the comfort piece and that shield over the shock without sucess. Did this happen to anyone else and did you come up with a fix? I'm sure there is a simple solution (quick fix) Calling all Mcgivers!

MacGyver. A Mcgiver sounds like something you would get a gay themed McDonald's.

You can glue the nut to your finger to get it started or buy one of those fancy finger puppet magnet tools.

Tk, just place the ecm on the fender liner in front of the battery and underneath the battery cable. Mine has been there fro over 5K miles with no ill effects. This will also prevent the seat pan from cracking the upper connector on the ECM. I taped up the exposed wires in the harness as a precaution, there is some exposed metal in the area.

I didn't have this issue as I just losened the front and rotated the ECM out of the way... BUT IIRC... someone drilled an access hole to get to the bolt and then plugged the hole with a rubber grommet. So now they have easy access

Don't recall if there were pics or not, but you might try a search to see if you can come up with anything.

I had the same thing happen. I took a piece of duct tape and folded it over backwards to make a two-sided blob of tape on the upper side of the nut. I then fished a thread down through the hole in the ECM and inner fender. I took something like a paper clip and bent it so that I could shove it into the nut and tied the thread to the paper clip. The paper clip was bent so that the nut was horizontal when it was supported by the thread. Carefully pull the thread up from the ECM until the nut is in place. Give it a firm pull so the duct tape will stick the nut in the recess. Pop the thread or fish it out from the underside. CAREFULLY install the bolt through the ECM into the nut and tighten.

Not the easiest trick, but way better than pulling all that stuff apart again.

that happened to me to. First I tried my handy dandy magnetic tipped screw driver like tool and accessed the hole from below along side the shock spring. That didn't quite hold it, so I duct taped the nut to this screw driver tool, pushed it right up there from below, and got the bolt started from above. Then just pulled the screw driver down and out, viola!

I read it here.
Put a small magnet inside the finger tip of a latex glove.

I feel your pain! I did the comfort a long time ago and installed the new bolt and nut while it was all apart leaving it so I could just swivel the ecm out of the way. Now I'm installing a new ecm and I can't get that damn nut off. The new screw has blue loctite on it and it wasn't too bad screwing it on when it was all apart but now I can't get a socket on it because of the plastic that surrounds it!!
I dropped my shock down so I could get the socket up there but it won't grab anything! It's hot as hell out there and I've been working in a brick oven all fricken day and I've had enough!!! I need a margarita and some C4!!

When I went to loosen mine, there is a plastic tab which is supposed to keep the nut from spinning, didn't work and the nut just spun..I could not get it off,so I removed the whole tail section,(not really that much time I find out)and worked on it on the bench..All is well now..

I just took the back bolt out, and very lightly loosened the front so that I could make it pivot. I have a very long slightly curved set of needle nose pliers that got enough grip to tighten it back up. I could see no need for changing the bolt in mine.

Vern, you sparked my interest so I went out and grabbed the needle nose pliers and with the shock off to the side I was able to get it on the nut but to no avail! I gripped it as hard as I could but could not keep it from turning. Looks like a special socket is in order.

I'm glad others have had this problem. I thought it was something I overlooked or didn't understand. A bad design.

My first experience with this part was when I installed the comfort kit. I got it threaded initially from below with a long socket extension and swivel/u joint. It was difficult but I was glad it was over. I never thought I'd have to remove or deal with it again.

Boy, was I wrong... I was having to remove mine yesterday to make ready for a new 'Eric Buell ECM' and the nut was just spinning below. I couldn't hold it. I ended up pulling the nut through with the bolt (long story). I then dressed up the hole with a dremel (cut the hole perfectly square) and inserted a 'plastic surface nut' from the top. It snapped into place. Now when I screw the bolt into the plastic piece, it begins to expand below the seat pan and holds the bolt / ECM firmly to the seat pan. Hard to describe the piece. I found it laying around the garage.

When I did the comfort kit, I epoxied the nut in place. Loosened and coated with the epoxy, the resecured and let set. Now it comes out without any pains and the nut remains in place. That's a big thanks to everyone posting what a pain it could be.

For some reason this important 'TIP' keeps getting glossed over in the multiple iterations of Comfort Kit install. The ONE thing (that a few found out early on) that saved many of us the headache of the problem ECM bolt refit was...you DONT have to REMOVE it in the first place!! Remove the short one but just slightly LOOSEN the tall one and swing ECM out of the way. Problem solved. Some didnt even remove the seat pan - just heat up the duct to pliability temp and it will go in without breaking. I unfortunately missed that one.
