I'm now relatively permanently unemployed (retired) & avoiding chores my wife deemed important, but not critical. Recognizing that we have different tire preferences, based on riding style, terrain encountered etc. So... among the selection out there - and you could only choose 1 tire... (I know, i know - artificially limiting) OK - 2 tires (1 front & 1 rear ) What would they Be & why ?? Since I'm already here, I'll start. PR2 - wet grip & mileage. |

Scorpion Sync, front D616, rear This combo helps keep me upright when crossing ditches to get around gates........ I know, cheap shot John, but I couldn't resist. |

PR2's because of mileage, easier cornering, thicker carcass, and grip is great wet or dry.(my comparisons to Syncs and 616) |

I vote Scorp Sync's as best all-around. They fixed my Firebolt (damn those D207s), and have been flawless on the Uly. On road, it's a pointy tire that wants to be on edge, sticky enough to dig in, and siped enough for heavy rain. I gotten 7000mi on the rear, more up front. Off road, it's great for fire roads, but forget about muddin'. The front will wash out and the rear will spin. |

Shinko 009 Raven's Cost less, wear better and handle better for the type of riding I do. Though I only have the Strada's to compare them to.... |

I thought the D207's on my firebolt were good grippy tires that wouldn't last more than 2000 miles. The scorpion syncs definitely were better than them. I have the Stradas on my Uly and so far like them a lot. Not enough miles yet to warrant a change, but I'm sure all the feedback you guys give is going to influence that decision when it comes. I'm 5000 miles in now, so it won't be too much longer. |

FRONT: Scorp Sync (Great Grip in the Rain) REAR: Diablo Strada (Great Mileage, compared to the Scorp Sync) . |

Hey Jerry - I'd fully recovered from the Uly "gate avoidance maneuver" just in time for my KLR 'over the cliff' trick riding demo. We're both fine now. (and Paul didnt want to take my KLR to Moab, cuz he was afraid of wrecking it - HA!) About time to tipover the Tiger...just to keep things even. How does mixing the Sync & Dunlap work out ? Ditto for you Johnboy. |

Gotta put my vote in for the PR2 front & rear. The Strada's were very sticky but wore unevenly...front and back squared off rather quickly and hindered performance. 1000 miles so far on the PR2's & love them! |

I ride 90% road. Mich PR2...by far. I have about 7600 miles on this rear tire and it looks 1/2 worn. My 1st rear was changed at 8800 miles. (I rode the bike quite a bit harder on the 1st rear PR2) So far my front tire has about 16500 miles on it. It also looks about 1/2 worn. I got about 4500 miles on a rear Sync and 9,000 on the front. (I had 2 rears and 1 front) I really like the way the PR2's feel and ride. The long life is a big bonus. They do cost more though. |

Only 2k miles on my Pirelli Angels right now, but they have taken the Strada's place as my favorite tire. On the XT, I've only ever run Stradas and now the Angels. On the X1, I've run Scorpion Syncs, Metzler M3's, and now the barely used set of Stradas that the XT was wearing from the dealer. Next set of tires on it will also be Angels. |

On my XT I ran the original Stradas. They felt good and very neutral cornering but the rear was shot at 5K miles. I replaced the front and rear with Continental Road Attacks. The ride was very aggressive in that the bike dropped into a corner much more readily than the Staradas. I rode approximately 6K on the first rear and currently have about 5K on the second rear. The front has 12K but is starting to cup enough that a slight head shake can be felt when decelerating at low speed. I am getting ready to order new tires and I am thinking about Dunlop Roadsmart or Michelin PR2. The Dunlop gets some good reviews on various websites and I have read good reviews on the PR2s. I want the perfect Sport Touring tire . Great handling and long mileage. Which one is the closest? Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks for the help. |

Nobuell - Got the Road Smarts on my wifes ST1300 - nice sticky neutral handling tire. Dont know about mileage yet. As you can see from others experience, the PR2s are an excellent wet/dry tire with proven mileage / durability. Good choice. |

Had two pairs of the Stradas. First set went 7500 miles, and they still had decent tread. So I bought another set. Rear went completely shot at 4500 miles while I was on my way home from a trip. Completely unacceptable to me. I have a cheap Shinko 006 on there now because I needed to get home when the rear went. In the spring, I'm going to get some PR2's... |

Well I've got 6500 out of my original rear sync, replaced it w/another and got 9000 out of the orig.front sync and replaced it w/another and now have 4000 on the front and am ready to replaced the rear...I think I'm gonna give the PR2's a try for the rear first, another 5000 and I'll get the front....How do they do on dirt roads??..I know the syncs would probably do better, just curious..I do about 80%-90% pavement.....Thanks!!! |

As long as you are talking 'dirt' they do ok. Make it 'mud' and you will be walking with it back to the pavement. |

190's work just fine on the Uly; many racers use them on their XB's. I actually didn't notice any difference switching to the 190. |

I ran Sync on my Triumph Sprint ST and after going through a rear tires in less than one season (I live in Canada so thats about 8,000Km or 5,000Miles) and countless flats and leaks!! I vowed never again. Too bad because they were some bad great tires when they were not leaking, flat, or bald. Too much worrying and maintnance, having to check the air 2 a day, fill them, chech them etc... I now have a TKC 80 on the back of the Uly and a Metzeler int he front. So far so good but I am changing out the metzeler for a Pirelli MT60 in the front. I will post how that goes in September after my TransLab trip. |

So far I'm liking the Conti Motions. I've got a bunch of HWY miles and they aren't getting a flat spot yet. |

Well...quite a collection of rubber so far. Have to add the Avon Distanzias. Ive run through 2 sets and like 'em. Just not much in way of mileage for long trips - but thats generally the case with SM tires. So far PIRELLI seems to be in the lead: Angels, Stradas, Syncs, Trails & occassional MT-60. DUNLAP has contributed D616 & Road Smarts. MICH offers the venerable PR2. CONTI the Road Attacks & Motions. SHINKO the Ravens & 006s. METZLER an M3 & one dirt oriented soul with a TKC. If I missed any - let me know. The PR2 seems to be the high mileage tire with few complaints. One Tiger owner claims he got 18K miles on a rear - must be light on the throttle and weight. I got 13K with another 2 possible, but don't run tires to the cords. Great in wet / dry conditions, but not likely a good mud tire. But few are in Uly sizes. The D616 & Stradas seem to have the most variation in satisfaction - ya love 'em...or not. Angels may become a prefered tire by many - too early to tell. In the quest for mileage & performance (however we define 'performance' for our particular use) we got a pretty good line up. If ya want tarmac longevity, there are some good options - If ya want more dirt, there are a few choices. For something in between - its all over the map. I am ready to try my first set of D616s to get me through the rainy season - the 4th tire brand on my Uly so far. The nice thing about tires is: if ya don't like 'em, in a few hours time, they can be swapped out. Probably go back to PR2s in the end...unless of course Angel reviews require a 5th tire "experiment". j |
