I was having a key made for my 2009 Ulysses yesterday and the gentleman making the key turned the ignition on and off about 6-8 times in quick succession. Since then, I have the yellow check engine light staying on after starting the bike. No help in the service manual. I'm sure it is related to the on/off sequence.
Any ideas?

I found today that the 'interactive exhaust actuator' is not working. When I do the diagnostic test that should close/open/close the valve, it doesen't move. I can hear the actuator making a humming noise. I disconnected the cable and moved it back and forth to make sure the valve in the exhaust is free and easy to move. It is free and was easily rotated. The actuator must have burned up the motor or stripped the gear to rotate the external cam. My best guess at this point is to replace that actuator.

Pull on the cable to see if it's binding up.

Will the check engine light shut off by itself after the actuator has been replaced? I am dealing with this exact same issue on my 08 XT.

I sure hope the new part lasts longer than the original or this could be an expensive bike to operate!

Thanks.

The cable and valve in my stock muffler is free and moves easily. I think my exhaust actuator was damaged when the gentleman making my key cycled the key on/off/on/off about 8 times in quick succession. When the key is turned on the actuator functions and repeated on/offs caused it to break one of the internal nylon gears.

While my bike is under warranty, I am 300 miles from the nearest dealer. It was easier/cheaper for me to locate and pay for a replacement. I called many dealers and didn't find a single one that had the actuator in stock. But, all said they could order one and ship to me for $165.

Since I knew mine was ruined and that I wasn't going to go the warranty route, I took it apart and inspected all the parts. I plugged it in to the bike without the cover and watched the inner workings take place. No question, mine was stripped and wasn't working.

Separate from this, I had ordered a Drummer muffler from KD fabrication and it is to be delivered Friday. Since the actuator isn't needed with the drummer (needed only for the ECU), I decided to order a 'servo emulator' from American sportbike for $45. It will replace the actuator and the ECM will think everything is fine.

IMHO, the actuator is a problem waiting to happen. I'd suggest to others that if you turn on the bike or shut it off, definitely wait 4-5 seconds before turning it back on.

I'm on my third one. The last one was out of warranty but the second one only lasted a month so Buell paid for it. The last one has the metal gears, no more problem.

I highly recommend getting the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM for Drummers since you are swapping the exhaust.

Froggy, thanks for the advice. I've been thinking about doing what you suggest. Does the Eric buell racing ECM retain all the trouble code functionality?

I'm headed to Colorado this Saturday with just the drummer and actuator emulator installed. We'll be there for a week. I should have already ordered it but didn't.

The Erik Buell Racing computer is the UBER-computer.

I run one on my (all stock except for K&N) '06 Uly, and it has - literally - ZERO flaws.

Great fueling.

Great spark maps.

No ding in fuel economy.

Awesome power and pull, any gear, any RPM.

Full muffler control.

Full DTC / CEL capability.

I've ridden this bike, with this ECM, from about 40 degree weather up to 110 degrees. Near sea level to about 2000' elevation, 95% humidity to dead-dry weather (gawd, I loved riding in the U.P.!). Behaves the same, no matter what. Loaded. Unloaded. Solo. 2-up. Doesn't care. Worth every cent.

I broke down and got the Eric Buell Racing ECU sent overnight. The Drummer is installed, the exhaust valve actuator has been removed, the actuator emulator installed and the old ECU is sitting on the shop bench - I'm now just waiting for the new one. I'll be installing the new ECU the night before a 3500 mile trip. I don't usually like to make changes like this before a trip, but what the heck..

I'm a little nervous with the muffler straps. I installed a new front strap but reused the rear two straps and the exhaust header clamp (cant remember the fancy name they have for that one). I torqued all the fasteners to the correct values and adhered to the suggested tightening sequence. The manual suggests you install a new header clamp anytime you remove the muffler? I didn't do that. It looks sturdy, the bolt works smoothly and hasn't been deformed. I'll probably recheck all of the muffler components torque settings one more time.

I can't wait to ride it. My brother will be riding a stock '09 Uly. We'll swap bikes to see how the drummer and ECU work as compared to stock.

Texbb, don't forget to pack your old ECM as a spare, just in case. Have a good, safe trip! Thanks.
