So, trying to remove my rear plug today, this happened:

plug wire

I wasn't even pulling on the wire that hard!

So now what do I do? Can this be put back together, or would I just be asking for trouble? I'm assuming I need a new wire. Anyone have the part # for me? '08 XT btw.

I sure hope my dealer has them in stock...

I put Magnacore wires on mine. Needed the little tool with rubber coated feet and the dog leg at the end. autozone $9. Check my posts ref. Magnacore about 2 weeks ago. part # and tips for instalation. good luck.i needed front one due to throttle adjustment cable wear and tear. I put the old and new wires on my Ohm meter and the reading for the magnacore was 2x that of the OEM part. (whatever that means).

+1 on the spark plug tool. It is a must to properly grip the plug boot when removing and installing.

Never pull on the wire.

I think you can kludge that one back together while you're waiting on a replacement if you can't find one locally. Carefully bend the spark plug clip apart where the wire goes in with some needle nose pliers. Pull the graphite thread back around the outside of the wire so it's captured between the outside of the plug wire and the clip, shove the wire back in the clip, and carefully re-crimp with pliers. Give it a gentle tug to make sure it'll stay together.

Never pull on the wire

Sure, now you tell me!!

Actually, I kind of knew that, but figured a little pull wouldn't hurt! I learned a good lesson today...

The dealer has ordered the wire for me, but it will only come in on Thursday. In the meantime, their mechanic showed me how to put the broken one back together, so I'll try that and hope it works.

Hughlysses,

That's exactly how the mechanic told me to do it, so it's good to get confirmation.

I'm going to do it right now... wish me luck!

Yes, this is what happens when the clip isn't first removed with a tool.

Yes, this will also happen with the Magnacores--actaully easier to do, if you ask me since the 'wire' is terribly fragile.

Yes, you can crimp/pinch the clip back on temporarily, just as Hughly mentioned. Note that it can generally only be done once and will fail at the worst possible time, especially if rain is in the forecast.

Good luck!

Well, I fixed the plug wire, and put it all back together. The bike starts and runs fine. I suspect I put it back together a bit better than it may have been originally... I'm pretty sure it's tighter anyway.

I'll keep it as is for now, and once the new one comes in, I'll carry it as a spare.

I think I'll pick up the tool for next time...

I CANNOT account for the attraction however...it was blazened all over kid stuff (lunch pails, clothing, school stuff, etc) starting about 25 years ago - must be enduring - still see it once in awhile in stores. Japan origins. Google it, you'll see. I found a sheet of 'hellokitty' stickers left over from my daughter (now 31) & offered them for free to Triumph Tiger riders... was subsequently banned from all future 'tiger fest' events & stripped of my membership. Go figure. j

That little guy at the top corner of my picture is the one and only Binoo, Toopy and Binoo fame.

http://toopyandbinoo.treehousetv.com/

Binoo is Toopy's little stuffed animal that doesn't talk, but moves around like a normal little living creature.

It's my 4 year old's favorite cartoon, so she of course has the Toopy and Binoo table mat. The reason Binoo is wearing a turban is because the mat is showing a scene where Toopy is imagining that he's a genie...

I have done the same thing. I reassembled the wire and ran it that way for probably 5K miles.

The Lisle 51250 Spark Plug Wire Puller is a simple and effective boot puller. Amazon sells it>> http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-51250-Spark-Plug-Pulle r/dp/B0002STS4E/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qi d=1279411319&sr=8-9

I have custom built my own puller patterned after the Lisle one just for that rear Buell plug.

I tried several of the other ones that they sell and most are junk.

Make sure that you coat the inside of your new boot with a little dielectric grease. It will be easier next time.
