Just picked up this 06 Uly totally stock. Just replaced the battery, plugs (iridiums), plug wires, and all the fluids. It seems to start a little hard sometimes, like the battery is dead but ecmspy says it is charging. It idles rough when cold and for the first few minutes of riding feels like it is surging a bit. Overall it does not feel as sorted or smooth as my 2000 X1 which has a race ecm, headers, exhaust, etc. It starts perfect, idles great and has instant power. Should I look into getting a Erik Buell Racing ecm and exhaust? Any help sorting these driveability issues would be great. I have been reading through all of the archives getting some ideas also. Sounds like that you need to check all of the ground connections, clean them up, add star lock washers and tighten. Then reset the TPS and AFV. It should run better after that. |

Get it hot, THEN reset the TPS and AFV. |

Make sure your battery terminals are tight. We had a problem with the bolts being a few thousandths too long. Put washers on them and tighten them until you cannot move the cables with your hands at all. Battery connections can cause all of these problems, but there is more. The '06 Uly likes to be started and let warm up for a couple of minutes in warm weather and for like five minutes or so when it is cold out. If I fire mine up and take off within a minute or so, even when it is ninety degrees, it will always cough and sputter for the first couple of miles, then it will smooth out and run fine. Also, do not touch the throttle while it is warming up, start it, let it idle for at least two to three minutes. Do not blip the throttle when sitting, and do not start the bike unless you are planning to warm it up fully, that takes about ten minutes of riding. Failing these methods of start up and ride, then go to the TPS and AFV resets. |

I'm with Ratbuell on this one. But it can't hurt to go over the grounds also as others have said. |

My hard starting problems went away on my '06 when I switched the battery ground strap from the stock mounting point on the battery box to a conveniently available spot on the frame. (remove the powder coat around the hole first to give it a clean spot.) |

quote:06 Uly feels, off
turn it on! 1 = off 2 = on I'm with those above...rest the TPS properly. If I bought an '06 Uly from an unknown background, my list of "must-dos" would include what you have done and the following: - clutch adjust - clutch cable adjust - lube clutch cable - flush brake fluid - adj primary chain (Message edited by andymnelson on July 13, 2010) |

thanks, I will do the TPS reset tonight. I did reset AFV to 100 as it was around 114 when I did the plugs. Why such an emphasis on the clutch cable and adjust? Have there been problems? nate |

Nate I wouldn't say that there's problems, but if the clutch cable and primary chain are out of spec our bikes really don't feel or run right. And they are very easy to adjust, so why not? |
