I'm wondering if it would be possible to remove the triple tail. I'm currently without a pillion and with the rear rack on the XT it's a pain to keep moving it about when I want access to under the seat. I'd definitely want the option to refit it again, so a non-destructive method would be required. : )

Anyone done this?

It comes off real easy. First remove both grab rails. They're held on with two screws each and come off very easy. Look under the seat and they should be pretty obvious. If not, I'll post a diagram.

Once you have the grab rails off, the tail will just pop out. I take digital pictures so I know how to put it back together, but it's pretty easy. After that, you can decide if you want to put the rails back on or not. They can be remounted without the tail if that looks like what you want.

You could modify the TT to operate without the catch that it takes a key to push in.

You need the tail if you plan on using the top rack.

I just removed the latch parts inside the left TT pivot so I can flip it down without using my key. Very handy. I'm still not exactly sure why it was designed with the key latch mechanism anyway. Does anyone here know for sure?
In theory, the bolts that attach the grab rails should come out very easily. Mine did not. I had to heat up the area with a heat gun to get the Loctite to break loose while using a 1/2" breaker bar for leverage. I got it a little too hot and started to melt the "C" shaped lock tab so I ended up replacing that too. When I re-installed the bolts, I just used a little blue Loctite and all is well. It seems that every bolt I have removed so far on this XT has been installed from the factory using red Loctite? Thanks.

Red loctite guaranteed nothing would fall off but also makes it a PITA! I agree, blue loctite is all that's needed on anything less than 5/8".

I've had the TT off my XT several times. Access to the bolts under the seat is a royal PIA. Have it set up so there's no need for the key and really like it that way. Rode with it and the hand rail off when I was running with the Pelican 1440's as there was no clearance for the hinged lid.

I was told because it is also meant to be used as a backrest it needed to lock into place.

I put the Touratech rack on the back. Made well and now can strap a duffle on back. Kept stock triple tail if can get wife to go on long trip with me. Never used top box as makes bike handle funny.

Don (Someday) took his Triple Tail off the Ulysses and removed everything if I recall correctly. It makes a really neat and clean looking installation.

Pelican 1440's - no tail or hand rails.
