Hello All, I'm new here but have been interested in buying and Uly for some time now. I have read through the owner information section but couldn't find all of my answers there. Within my price range there is really only one Uly in my area and it has 53,000 miles on it. It's a 2006 model. My question is should I consider this bike or run? I know to ask the obvious questions like previous owner and records if any but looking for some solid advice here.
Thanks in advance and I hope to be part of the family soon.

-Dom

we would need to know the price of that bike, or your price range to be much help.

The asking price is $5995. And I just verified with the salesman that all the maintenance was done at the dealership, and this dealership sold it to the original owner.

Mnrider; it is a ton of miles which is why I am hesitant, but that may allow me some room to trade my 07 sportster.

Thats a lot of miles for $6k. I bought my 06 with 15k on it for less back in 2008.

Thats too much. Someone was willing to part with a 2009 here a couple weeks ago for $6900 with less than 5,000 miles on the clock.

So are they going to give you the bike for that price and clear what you owe on the sportster?

Not sure what they will do for me on the sporty. I assume it would be similar to a car deal if you owe more than the car is worth they tac it on to the top of the bike. I just started looking this morning when the credit union ok'd the loan.

Offer $4000 OTD if they can verify the maint. That is a good amount of miles, but if it has been well kept and serviced and runs well it should keep going for some time.

Take it for a ride for at least 30 min.
When you bring it back check everything.
Leaks?, shifts smoothly, oil level good? and clean, fan runs?, tires(even wear), brakes, belt, steering head tension, bearings, take off the the inner air cover to check for residue.

In the meantime see what something comparable is selling for on e-bay and cycletrader and keep shopping around, there are plenty to be found.

$5995 for that bike plus taxes and dealer fees and blah blah = way too much.

Thanks guys. Calling back to see if I can set up a test ride. The dealer is about 90 min away from my house so...

What kind of maintenance should I look for to be done?

Yep I will keep looking, love this forum, lots of action here.

Thanks

Hmmm...6 grand for a half (or more) used up Uly ?? I dunno - There was alot of learning by Buell in the first few years of XB production. The 08's had about 15 changes ('improvements'?) that rectified some of it's earlier issues. The engine / trans are pretty tough (unless ya pop a plug like Doc greg & a few others) I'd certainly still consider a Uly - but at a better price, newer model & lower miles. Great riding machine! Good luck. j

That price is a little under what I would hope my 07 would bring if I was to want to sell it.
And my bike has all the bags, new tires, 2010 rear wheel, and some other goodies and around 6000 miles

I think it is too much for that kind of mileage.

Haven't had a lick of serious trouble out of my '06...and I'm...shall we say..."less than gentle"?

My bike:
stock powertrain
K&N
Erik Buell Racing ECM programmed for stock powertrain, K&N, stock exhaust with muffler valve control, 4/2010
Black seal rear wheel bearings, 5k miles, preventative maintenance (still orange up front)
Replaced drive belt (I broke it, totally my riding style that below-freezing day) at 12k miles with .AKF version
Replaced base gaskets at the same time as the belt - warranty was up in 2 days, the rear was just starting to seep...the shop said "OK, we'll get 'er done while we do your belt".
77 connector failed around 13.5k miles (I blame the Res Ride - also done 2-up, with a GPS-logged 103 mph max speed that day). Replaced with screw-terminal splices, no issues since.

Just finished a Homecoming trip fully (over)loaded, 2-up, 2300 miles in 3 days riding time. Maryland to Toledo, day 1. Toledo to East Troy via the UP, day 2. ET back to Maryland via Chicago, day 3.

It used a quarter-quart of oil the whole trip.

Don't be afraid of the '06. At all. Negotiate your best deal...but it's an awesome bike.

If you do it negotiate. Make sure all recalls are done side stand, li plate light housing, bank angle sensor. Perhaps have them toss in a 2010 wheel (3 bearing). If not have them replace the bearings if they have orange seals to the black seal bearings. The bearings are not very expensive. Word of warning however, I would suggest unless the wrench knows the ideosyncratic method of installing the wheel, I would take the wheel to them have the bearings swapped out then reenstall wheel yourself.Have them install the updated plug kit for the #77 plug (Voltage regulator to battery). The tool to install the connectors in this Deutsh plug is very expensive. Another minor issue is check under the seat and see if the spacer block, which is a black plastic block is bolted to the top of the ECM that protects the ECM from the seat. The early 06's did not have it and there were problems with the seat rubbing on the ECM and wires there. Another issue with the 06's that some folks are having with this level of mileage is the front engine isolator mount. It is an easy fix (if you can break the front bolt free), and the replacement kit cost about $90. Going to take mine to shop with an impact driver to free up bolt then come home and replace mine on Wed. I would suggest you do a search of this forum, there are lots of photos as to what to look for and also how the bike feels when the isolator is going bad. If it has been sitting around for awhile and folks have been starting it, have them check and perhaps swap out the plugs, they foul easily when folks just start bike and blip throttle. I would perhaps bring in my own plugs and not use the Hardley ones. I have not been happy with factory issue. I use the NGK's that someone here suggested we use and they work just fine. I would also review the work sheet and see when the last TPS reset was done and again if they have a good Buell wrench working there have them reset it. If not there are folks in your neck of the woods that can do it for you. Not to speek for them, but just based on their history would be happy to do it for you.For the price they are asking, you should be able to get lots of little things that are labor related but not merchandise expensive done. I think with the miles however I would strike a deal that if I purchased the front isolator you will install it for free, that is if I could not get them to split do the whole thing as part of the deal or even sell the isolator to you at dealers cost. I think that my 06 Uly is the most comfortable bike I have ever ridden or owned. 01 Goldwing, Concourse, Wife's Wee strom, etc. Also one of the most all around fun bikes I have ever had. Maintenance piece of cake. My only issue I have had are a few electrical gremlins. All resolved in the privacy of my garage but a PIA anyway. Stranded 2x alongside road. One was the #77 plug that they have fixed and that I mentioned above and the other time the ignition fuse wire (orange and grey) under the fuse block worked lose and bike cut out. Both fixes done at home with help from this forum. Also if you have been lurking for awhile you might have followed the issue with another member that was I believe in Wyoming w/a broken belt and all the folks that were coming to his rescue. We are a great neighborhood here as good but not as extensive as the Goldwing Brotherhood. If you go with this bike and are handy with the most simple of hand tools come on back and we will help you walk through the minor niggling little things that can become a problem if not fixed.

I just saw a blue 08 XB12X with hard bags and topcase for $7500, I was told the price was negotiable.
It had the orange bearings but the rest of the bike looked to be in good condition.

I am not in the market, I was just posting so if there was someone in need of an 08 they might make a deal.

As far as mileage goes, it is an 08, in Michigan, so I am thinking less than 10K miles.

Well guys I didn't get a chance to check out the high mileage bike yesterday, weather was calling for 50% chance of thunderstorms and i didn't feel like wasting 3+hrs of my afternoon.

Pso: You list some great advice and items to check in the service history the dealer claims to have on this bike. I will use your check items when I do to check this bike out.

Paralegalpete: I would love to keep the Sporty, but it is the most uncomfortable bike I have ever ridden. I have tried new seat, several sets of bars just to change the riding position enough to be able to ride the bike longer than 30-45 minutes without my back hurting.

I think anything above $6k is probably out of my price range unless at a dealer. If I buy private party I will need to keep a couple grand to help me get from underneath my Sporty and try and sell it in this market. Maybe at a dealer I could $7-7.5k if they would swap, but I doubt it.
