How many HARD miles is your primary chain good for.

I've never heard of anyone ever needing to replace a primary chain on a XB.

After a 13k mi trip, it was only out of spec by a skoch'. I just check it along with clutch adjustment @ each oil change (5K)

I adjusted it just barely at 10,000 miles.

Funny coincidence, I just read a thread on a Sportster forum where a guy broke his primary chain, locked up the rear wheel, skidded for 400 feet before going down.

He and his passenger are OK save for a little road rash

20K on mine with no problems, minor adjustments at the service intervals.

Has anyone put an open primary on a xb?
Do they even make one?

Well...I guess you *could* do an open primary.....personally though I don't see the benefits.

I usually adjust mine when I either hear the rattle at idle, or my shifting gets wonky. I do check it at every service, but it's rare that it needs more than a nudge on the adjuster screw. The Uly was running fine but had a little raprap at idle, so I adjusted it before the Homecoming trip - at 13k miles.

That belted primary would mean a dry clutch and that sounds like a bunch of maintenance to me and short life. I sure would like a torsion bar automatic cam chain tensioner though. That would be the bee's knees.
