I had been using Syn3 and switched to Mobil 15W-50 @ $7.49 mainly because I didn't want to give HD $15.00 per Qt.

What I discovered was that the fan now comes on a lot less and the bike seems to run cooler w/ Mobil 15W-50.

This was very noticeable - anyone else have this experience?

Ditto for me when I switched from Syn3 to AMS 20-50.

I found that out in 2003 on my old XB9R.

I've never used anything but Mobil 1 15W50. I've talked in person to Mobil 1 folks out at Sturgis in the past and of course they pushed their V-Twin expensive syn oil but when asked point blank about the 15W50, they said it wasn't a problem to use it. Their company line was that V-Twin was better. Yeah better for Mobil's bottom line profit wise. I've never had a problem with Walmart's 5 quart bottles of Mobil 1 15w50 and the price is way better than any of the alternatives.

I noticed the same thing switching from whatever was in my Uly when I bought it to Mobil 1 15w50. I use it in both of my Buells.

Are you guys using mobil 15w50 in your primary case also? If so any problem with clutch action or chain noise?

Any problems with the stator, or stator plug, when used in the primary?

The only lubricants known to cause problem with the stator are GL-5 gear oils, including Mobil-1 gear oil. No problems with the motor oil.

15w50 Mobil Syn in both holes in all 3 of my Buells (X1, XB9S and Uly). Works fantastic, and only $23 for a 5 quart jug at Wally World!

Hughlysses-I thought back in 06 folks that used anything other than the Formula + from Halrey had problems with the 3 pole stator windings? the reports were that the rubber sheilding would dissolve or some such. I thought this was corrected when buell went to the different stator. Was that problem only when gear oil was used or anthing other than the Formula stuff.

Pso- Only GL-5 gear oils have caused the problems. I had an S3 back at the time and experienced a stator failure after running Mobil-1 gear oil for about 10,000 miles. Quite a few other Buell riders also had stator failures running various GL-5 gear oils. AFAIK no other lubricant has ever been found to cause a problem with the stator.

I've always run Formula+ in my Uly just because that's what came in it from the factory, it works well, and is easy to find. People have run Mobil-1 10W50 or the V-twin 20W-50 in the trannys without problems. Mobil recommends the use of their Racing 4T 10W-40 synthetic motorcycle oil in Buell transmissions (I e-mailed them and asked, as have a couple of other Badwebbers). At least a couple of Badwebbers are running that and say it works well.

I use Mobil-1 15W-50 for the engine (in many bikes I've owned), but in the Uly I use Formula+ for the transmission.

And I guess the one thing I haven't had problems with is anything related to lubrication...

Spending more money doesn't mean it's better.

There have been more than a few Buellers that have ran Redline Shockproof gear oil, Heavy and Light, and experienced stator failures caused by a wax like residue buildup on the coils which presumably caused a heat buildup that ultimately broke down the insulation and shorted out the windings.

The wax like residue is an unwanted side effect of this brand oil in primary cases. It's OK in separate trannys like the big twins have though.

Even though this failure mode is not related to the corrosion of copper wires that a GL-5 can cause, I won't run Redline Shockproof gear oil in my Buell's trannys again. Be advised.

Just finished a 2,000 mile vacation trip. Just before the trip I switched from Sync3 to Mobile 1. The trip was from Boise, ID up and around Banff, Canada. We were two up, and with heavy loaded bags. With Sync3 I was adding about 4 oz every 500 miles. With the Mobile 1 I didn't add any oil on the trip, and when I checked it when arriving back in Boise, it was only down to the second X.

I also ran Mobile 1 in the primary case.

I do believe the fan didn't run as much at slower speeds.

I am please with the Mobile 1.
