Heyall...I need to do some miles in August and my butt won't take it. All my searching points to AirHawk old man cushions which fits my profile. Anybody recommend the right size for Uly seats? Pinion too? The mid size is 14x14 but thinking the small at 18x12 may be a better fit. Need your input. Euly

Hey Eulysses, I tried the airhawk, and was not impressed. I went to TJMaxx, and bought a sheep skin for $39.00 (they have black, and white). It is a cover that fits perfect. It does not get hot, and it is VERY comfortable, even in 100 degree days. The cheapest skin you will find. Just my .02

I went with the name brand sheep skin, and it was only a couple bucks more than that TJMaxx.

alaskaleather.com

Current advrider coupon code for 10% off is 'deadsheep' I believe.

I have the Alaska Leather sheepskin and like it.

You can get a cheaper one than TJMaxx; Ikea sells them for $25 all day long. Theirs are "long haired" and would probably cover an entire Uly seat although you'll have to figure a way to fasten it down.

I bought a sheepskin off Ebay. It was longhaired and had enough to make two covers.

For fastening I got some brass grommets from the local hardware store, and I use the small loop bungies to secure it on the bike.

Bicycle shorts are another option. I've got a pair with some pretty plush padding that I wear on long trips. Just used them to ride my Ducati Monster 1400 miles over 2 days and it helped a lot.

I use an Ikea sheepskin on long trips... I keep it tied down by stuffing it under my tent bag that I bungee on the back seat.

It definitely helps, especially in hot weather.

Wow. It was the 5 seat comfort type test on the web that gave the nod to AirHawk that made me ask the question. Can you guys endure 4 days in the saddle with sheepskin or beads ok? Euly

i, ve got over 60,000 miles on my Uly and i finally had to stop and do somethign about a case of monkey butt on my last ride. I started a long ride fresh on leave from Iraq with zero seat time in the last 9 months. missing your wife and kids will make you ride long ways 1350 the first 24 hrs home. so yeah my REAREND was hurting. stopped in at J&P cycles in Daytona area and picked up the pear shaped Airhawk. to say the least my A$$ thanked me for the next 1400 miles home. Takes a bit to get used to and get the right air in it for your weight. Loved it and my brother inlaw just used it for a cross country ride since my A$$ in back in Iraq. He ordered one when he got back. Quality construction but the straps are if'y. Life time warranty on the bladder so well worth the money . day to day i wouldn't use it but a multi tank dya i'll be throwing under my rear.
BTW i wear bike shorts when i ride too. but that last ride i didn't have them to wear and paid for it with a bad case of the monkeybutt.

4 days in the saddle with a sheepskin will be "no problem". you WILL have to watch out for the sheepdogs.

I've used this on several bikes - not on the Uly - I love the seat. It's a lot cheaper than the airhawk, heavy duty and the camo does not cost extra. $14.95

I have used a sheepskin for years and what's nice is that you can use it to keep warm at night if you camp. If it gets wet then just snap it like a rug and it sheds the water right off. Those pelts last forever. Mine's probably from New Zealand and covers both front and back. They will sit you up a good 1/2" because they are thick, that is, if you get a good one that'll do what you expect it to do.

Thanks for your sacrifices Rotor. You have my respect and jealousy! The Lord bless your family in your absence.

Looks like I should just start with one of the least expensive suggestions/combos and see what my sore butt will ultimately need. I appreciate all your feedbacks...we have some great solutions here. Euly

A young man I was riding with recently has put 75K miles on his R1150GSA in the last two years. He swears by his sheepskin butt pad. Between his recommendation and what I've read here today I've sent an order into Alaskaleather.

I have a long hair sheepskin and a sheared (shorn?) one. The long hair lays down so it doesn't feel as padded and doesn't let as much air circulate. I like them both but the sheared is more comfortable to me.
I like the airhawk as well. Last trip I switched back and forth between the airhawk and the long hair skin (didn't have the sheared one yet) and even put the skin over the airhawk. That way my butt had a change every 150 miles or so. If I had to choose just one I'd go with the sheared skin.

Eulysses,

Every year I head out for about 9 days of straight riding. Last year was the first with the Uly, and my ass did get pretty sore by the end. I think the biggest reason was that it was hot for the early part of the week, and we ran into rain a few times, so the combination of heat and the Uly's pre-comfort kit crotch heat, and the wetness made things worse. The sheepskin definitely helped, but I still got sore.

This year, I've got some Aerostich cotton shorts to wear commando under my riding pants, hoping that that will help with the seams of my underwear irritating me. Also, I've got some spandex "moisture-wicking" underwear to try as well, hoping that they will eliminate the moisture induced problems that I experienced last year. Also, I'll be bringing some baby powder with me to pour into my shorts in the mornings to help keep things dry.

I can let you know in about 3 weeks how it went!

I got an AirRider seat pad for my Goldwing and use it on the Uly. Works well, Vents very well abd oritects from heat migrating through seat. I am going to try some LDcomfort.com shorts for long rides. A friend of mine has two pair and swears by them. Seams are in the proper places, wics very well and we ride up to 14 days, 10 hours at a time. He washes the one pair in the sink at night and they are usually dry in a few hours.

The Airhawk is a great product, I keep it for every trip no matter the bike. Sometimes your ass just needs a change of scenery and with the air cells it makes for much more pleasant touring.

For two up, I would get two, you do not want one rider shifting their weight affecting the balance of the other rider.

I have the airhawk medium cruiser pad. It's okay, but I don't think it's the be-all, end-all for seat comfort. I had a Russell Day-long on my last bike, so I was really spoiled.

I think I may be going to a custom seat option on the Uly - either a Russell or a Sargent or a Mayer. The stock seat on my 08 XT really hurts after a bit.

The other thing I might try first, are a set of 1" bar risers. I think my arms are just a smidge too short, which is pushing me forward and resulting in some odd pressure points on my rear. Sitting up just slightly more could be the ticket.

I have an Air Hawk I've used on my Harley, it gives me an extra 150 miles a day. anything over about 100 miles on my Uly and the discomfort starts, next longish trip on the Uly and I'm trying the Air Hawk.

It makes a big difference if you get the air right, your butt should be 1/2" off the seat and you should be able to just roll from cheek to cheek.

I have a medium size rectangular Air Hawk. I always carry it on long trips, but now that I have the comfort kit I seldom use it.

It's ability to insulate my azz from the heat of the seat was as important as cushioning. If I am two up, or toting the tent and stuff across the back seat, I must have it, because I cannot move around like I normally do. Seat real estate is the most important thing for me in long distance riding. If I can move all around on the seat 700 mile days are easy.
