If there was ever bike porn, that video is it. I've been wondering what to go to next, after I finally can't find parts for or get sick of dicking with the electronics on the Uly...

New Ducati MTS was the only bike of interest to me, although all the electronics seem scary. I had a tiger 1050, and still think about that bike. The 1050 motor has got to be the best thing going in the moto world.
This new 800 really has me thinking. Can't wait to see how it is. It just might be my next bike. Triumph's rock. They are great bikes.

I remember Triumph hell keeping my Bonny and Cub running in the 60's and 70's. Hey...maybe British motors have been redeemed. Leery of them.

Ah, Eulysses the modern Triumph's have a very good reputation for reliability since they came back around 93. I had a 97 sprint for 6 years and all I replaced was the ignition pickup and a thermostat. Great bikes.

The biggest problem I know of with the modern triumphs is from the first versions, where maintenance seemed to be way down on the list of important things when they were designing the bike. My buddy had a '95 sprint, and there were some pretty complicated maintenance procedures - ie. having to remove the carbs to clean/change the air filter, having to drain the engine oil to replace the chain.

I suspect they've become better maintenance wise...

May even swap chain for shaft drive...rumors unclear on this. Triumphs are not as simple to maintain as a Uly (discounting of course the breakdowns) But they are generally more reliable. My 06 Tiger requires removing tank to change air filter, has shims to install for valve adjust, sync throttle bodies etc. But if you maintain them - many get more than 100K mi with no major failures. Mine's a 955 - sweet motor - but I think the 1050 is the pinnacle of motorcycle power plants. Tigertriple.com has Aug 2nd as date of introduction. If your thinkin of an f800GS...I'd wait a few weeks and see what the Hinkley factory has birth'd in the new "Kitty litter".

The one thing I could clearly see in several shots of the teaser video was a chain drive.

Jphish,

The video on the Triumph site clearly shows a chain.

I had a '96 885 Speed Triple. The Triumph triple is the sweetest motor in cycledom. Whether it be the 675, 885, 955, 1050 or even the Rocket III. Triumph triples rock the street!

I loved my Sprint but hated working on it. Nothing was designed for easy maintenance, but on the other hand it didn't need much.
You could modify the air box so you did not have to pull the carbs. I had a KN but you can not buy just the stock air filter you have to buy the whole housing with it.

The amazing thing is... Triumph is increasing Market share while HD is declining - interesting to see where things are in 10 years as all us Social Security eligible 'boomers' go from 2 wheelers to 'walkers'. I plan to ride til at least 75...so watch out!! Sprintex - the more modern FI Tigers components are pretty accessible... once tank's removed. Rwven - I think they did that to confuse us? The other asylum I belong to (TigerTriple) is predominantly prognosing chain, but a few are still suggesting we aint seen "it" yet (whatever "IT" is?) and the video doesnt tell us much & really only serves to raise the 'buzz' level. Who knows ?? If I had to bet though...I think you're right on the chain.

Our local Triumph/BMW dealership is a place that I frequent quite a bit. I personally know a few of the folks there. When I asked about the existing Tiger almost everybody there mentioned that they rarely see the Triumphs in for more than standard maintenance. A look at bikes in the shop seem to bare that out. Although if you look at any HD dealership you rarely see any Buells in the shop either, so it might simply be a numbers thing.

This should be good though. I'm excited to see what Triumph produces.

If you want to see the next great thing in motorcycles, google "Highland Motorcycles". Made right in Oklahoma. These guys have their priorities straight i think. Light weight, powerful, off the shelf components, maintenence easy, made here in the USA. Yes, they have to refine their designs alot, and they are alittle raw still, but they talk of an adventure bike to come. That could be the best of all worlds(Uly,KTM,BMW). I'll give em about 5 yrs. by then my Uly should be very well used....

Uly_dude- Very bad news for Highland; 3 of the top guys at Highland were killed in an air crash on Saturday. Check the Quickboard for a link to the story.

RIP

thanks Hughlysses. Well that's a crappy deal, one step forward, two steps back. Thus sums up my quest for the perfect adventure bike. I hope everyone involved will overcome this terrible loss.

Hmmmmmm. That digital mockup looks great from the rear to about 2/3 to the front. Then I fall out of love. One of the biggest differences to me between the Uly and the GS is with the Uly you feel right in the middle of the action but with the GS, the triple tree disappears into a mass of plastic and then something goes on down there somewhere. I really dislike frame mounted farings...nuts.
