Hi; My fan hasn't been working on my Uly. Before I replace it, is there a good way to test the fan or voltage to the fan? If the fan proves bad, anybody know any good tips or shortcuts on getting that out of there? Thanks much! 06 XB12X 33k |

ECMspy will let you run diagnostics. It forces the ECM to turn it on, so you can see for yourself whether it is functioning correctly. You can also check to see if there are any trouble codes for the fan present. |

You can unplug it to test the leads. The power is on the motor all of the time, the ECM controls it through the ground. Should be able to unplug the front ECM plug and run a jumper from ground to the black and orange wire(upper right corner of the plug facing it from the left side of the bike). That should make it run on high. If it works, look for the 'Flashy Light/Run/Skip' threads around here and one about wiring a switch to turn the fan on. Did you check the fuse? As far as removing it goes the steps are in the book, if you have installed the comfort kit that will be in the way too. |

Where's a good place to source ECMSpy? Any other way to force the fan on to test it? At the moment it hasn't set a trouble code but the light has come on a few times... Thanks! |

I had a hell of a time getting my new fan in. The old one came out fairly easy but I could not get the new one in!. I finally took the top shock bolt out, swung it out of the way and it was a piece of cake from there. I read on a badweb thread that someone replaced one on the side of the road. Must have been double jointed or something, there's no way! |

Snub13; How long did it take you to swap it? Can a guy do it in an evening or two? |

Any other way to force the fan on to test it? Uh yeah, like I said un plug the front ECM plug. Using a jumper wire from the neg terminal on the battery, touch it to the connector in the plug for the black/orange wire, it's on the upper right corner of the plug. The fan should run on high. |

+1 Snub. I replaced mine. Took out top shock bolt, piece of cake. Worst part was how short the connectors are to the plug for the fan. |

"How long did it take you to swap it? Can a guy do it in an evening or two?" Absolutely! It's not really that big of a deal and it took me (it seemed to me) WAY longer than it should have. I was following the book in reverse but the bloody thing just wouldn't go in. Maybe I just expected an easier go of it after reading some of the posts here? Not a big deal, take your time, drink a few beers, spend some quality time with your Uly. As Etennuly mentioned, if you have a comfort kit, that will get in the way also. Fortunately mine was per comfort kit install. PS: Speaking of the comfort kit and difficult fixes....After reading about it here, I was expecting a real struggle with the seat pan but everything went back together in a snap. Just goes to show you that some things are easier (or luckier) for some people. Froggy and Etennuly are the real deal, they know they're way around a bike way better than I do. |

If you saw me attempt to work on my bike, you would know that what you said is full of shit. Just because I can read the damn manual doesn't mean I can fix it! (45 days since I last rode my 1125R due to not being able to install a muffler) |

My fan comes on when the engine temperature exceeds 210F while running. When the engine is off, the fan will run anytime the engine temperature is greater than 150F. I have a Honda vfr 800 and the cooling pump comes on when the engine temp reaches 210F and stops when the temp gets to 190F I think. 210F must be the magic number for allowable high temperature limits when motorcycle engines. |
