My muffler needed painting and I decided I'd hate to have to replace the muffler straps and that pipe to muffler clamp. So I just cleaned the muffler of rust the best I could, then sprayed it with rust converter. Then I sprayed it with rattle can aluminum colored paint. The only time my muffler has ever been off was for warranty replacement. Easy to spray paint without removing it. Bike runs like a top as always.

Used a similar method - - just masked off the engine with a some paper and put some blue tape on the straps; found the automotive rattle-can Rustoleum High Heat 2000 degree paint works well...

I'm even lazier.

I've painted mine that way several times, and was too lazy to even post about it on BadWeB......

Mine rusted so I replaced it with a Micron exhaust. Now that is rusting too, time for something else! : D

I'm so lazy I can't be bothered to bend over and check the muffler.

Mine has 52,500 miles on it so far, uh, these things have a muffler?

My skid plate is a little rusty, but I cannot see it from where I sit!

since the headers point down, cut off the muffler at the headers.

how loud would it be if there was no muffler?
like an HD with straight pipes?
like an offshore race boat?

They are actually quite loud. I fired up my City-X when I had the muffler off to put on the race kit. LOUD, for sure!

Thanks for the confession 'Electra - good to know I'm not the only one with a "minimalist muffler maintenance mentality". I removed it once to do it "right"... & ended up orange again before the season was over. So what the hell...who looks under there anyway. Hey PNW Uly - you tried bedliner on the muffler yet ??

Ha-ha... This a segue into the "Hammered" thread ??

I can state that Line-X is not a good option for anything around the exhaust system...

We riding this weekend?

The only real problem with this is that the worst spot for rust is under the straps...you can "fix" the cosmetic portion using your method, but the muffler is still rusting away under the straps!

...at lest it looks good tho! : p

That's what is nice about stainless steel-no painting.

Really how much more would a SS muff have added?

Ron, you are right-it would probably add more to the cost of the bike than most people would want to pay. My point was that, the premium I had to pay to get the stainless performance muffler rather than the standard steel performance muffler wasn't that much more, probably less than $200 more. ymmv.
