maybe this has been done to death, but is this something that breaks often, and if so is it covered under warranty?

In the last month, I now have a headlight that doesn't work and a broken exhaust strap. Hopefully, both are warranty?..

This is an 09 XP.

Thanks!

I would say they will be covered. I wouldn't ride it with the broken strap though, might cause a cracked pipe, or broken stud in the head.

Jim, mine was and they also replaced the two rear straps and the muffler clamp.

I think my front strap broke because previously I had lost the front strap mount bolt and nut (if that makes sense)
I noticed the missing fastener and replaced it. A few weeks later the strap broke

pete, did you ride the bike with the broken strap? I hate having a bike in the garage I can't ride

I broke a front strap in the middle of nowhere.
I drove the bike 5 miles or so into a small town with a hardware store. I found some large "hose clamps" and I was on my way. I used 2 of them because they didn't look a strong as the original strap. I continued on the trip, and rode for about a week after until I could get a proper front strap.

I did limp it home, and a local uly rider sold me his spare clamp which I installed until the warranty parts became available.

I also now carry the two worm clamps as noted in the previous post.

I would not ride it without the front clamp as I now know you could snap the header bolt

Got the new strap finally, BUT
do I really need to pull the muffler to gain access to replace the strap? Seems kinda ridiculous?!
What am I missing??

Yes you do.

I just loosened the rear straps (you can reuse those) and then removed the front muffler mount fastener (screw and bolt) that will allow you do get the clamp on the front mount.

Do you have a service manual?

There is a specific torque sequence to the re tightning process.

As well you are not supposed to re use the torca clamp that fastens the muff to the expaust pipe

bummer. I have scheduled service for another warranty item Tues. I'll just leave it and let the dealer take it apart since I don't have another front torca clamp.

I do have the service manual and saw the steps. I was just hoping there was a non approved work around

Well if it is anything like mine, you are probably coming up on a Throttle Body and or Speedometer failure. I can't seem to catch a break.

What causes the front exhaust strap to fail, and so soon? Thanks.

Bueller XT, I have no idea. My bike only has about 6500 miles on it. I looked down last week, and noticed it hanging there. Honestly, I don't know how long it's been broken. The stud snapped just before the nut. Maybe, it was tightened too much at factory???

I would say to start off that its a poor design, to much pressure for that one clamp. Should be two on the front as well as the rear. Theres a lot of force placed on that one clamp.

the front muffler strap is only ment to be tourqued one time
after that it must be replaced.
as per service manual

Is there enough real estate there to allow a hose clamp alongside the original clamp as a sort of back-up to share the load?

Not without a new bracket, which would be a complicated bit of design and fabrication.

What part generally breaks, the bolt or the band itself?

Just wondering if a Stainless Steel cable tie would work for this application. You can get them of various widths and lengths and they are rated very strong.

Mine broke at the band.

"Very Strong" probably isn't strong enough... Those stock torca clamps (the thick ones) will happily crush the stock can before failing...

Though you could probably get several of those straps through there, so maybe with enough of them it could work (though it might look a little mickey mouse).

Ronmold

Mine was the strap itself.

the bolt on mine broke..It's a really bad design. I suppose it'd be one thing if they use a cheap flimsy bracket. It's only an $11 part. No biggie, but they should've made it easily swapped.

We may incorporate a second spring next to the first one to help keep more tension.
