This is copied from the Uly Dirty Tire Thread in the knowledge vault here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/150224.html?1271079337

I figured there was enough interest here to cross-post.

Now after my long trip, a tire wear update:

Scorpion Trails after 4800 miles. These last 3200 miles were hard. Fully loaded down bike, roughly 1600 miles of freeway, 1600 miles of back roads. And the tires got HOT! I often went 250 miles with no stops whatsoever. Not good for tire wear. Also worth noting, I ran on a flat back tire for a good twenty minutes (looking for the first pull off) after I caught a nail. That really cooked the back tire, if I were to guess, I'd say that took at least a thousand miles worth of rubber off. Plugged the tire (which was difficult! These things have heavy duty carcasses!) and proceeded on my way.

But anyway, 4800 miles:

Front: 0.120" or about 4/32's
Minor (not noticeable in handling, only when you rub your finger across it) flat spot across the middle.
Still 76% life left!

Rear: 0.147" or about 5/32's
More significant flat spot across the center, still not noticeable in handling, only when looking at it or feeling it with your hand. The second picture shows it a little better.
About 55% life left.

(A note: My % life left is till 0, or bald, not till wear bars or anything like that)

Anyway, I'm still super pleased with the tires. I will be doing another 1300 mile long weekend over the 4th of July, and will post another mileage update after that.

Nice, I've never had a tire that wasn't bald in 4800 miles. How are they in the curves, I really don't like the way the scorpion syncs turn. The ones that came stock on my STT were at the cords at 4800.

I haven't had any slippage yet (Other than on tar snakes), so I'm more than happy with the handling.

Cool! Thanks for the update. I think that will be my next rear for the Uly.

Impressive - did you try them on any dirt?

I did 240 miles offroad on these tires. The gripped about as wheel as any street tire, but had no failures. Got through deep sand, 3 ft deep water crossing, and dirt roads. I am happy with them.

I've used them in a bit of dirt and a good amount of gravel. They work just fine. Not knobby traction, but the trade-off for on road traction and tread-life is perfect for my use.

I doubt they will be worth a darn in deep stuff or mud, but that's fine with me.

You think the Trails are thicker than the Syncs? Looking for "thick" tires.

Thanks for checking in, Mike. 4800 miles and still going. That is excellent! I look forward to your next update.

Pirelli told me the Trails are much 'heavier duty' than they Syncs. I take that as "thicker".

I've never held a sync to compare myself.

Next update will be in 1 week.

New Update!

6100 miles on them now. Did a 1275 mile ride this weekend. Half 2 or 4 lane state routes, half freeway. Fully loaded (3 bags and aux. fuel tank).

Front:

Wear is pretty similar to before (human error in the measuring apparently)

Rear:
A bit thinner than before. Just shy of 4/32's now. 45% tread left till bald.

Here you can see the wear bar in the middle, plenty of meat left before I hit it!

Next big ride is in the middle of August. I'll probably need to mount a new set for that ride. I don't think I'll trust them for another 2000 mile ride at that point. The new set will definitely be the same type though, I love these things!

Mikef5000

Thanks for the update. Again, I love them on the Strom. Only have 400 on the rear so far on the uly. I would have no fear running these to the wear bar. I usually get a tire off the bike at the wear bar just because I don't mind wet rides and want the wet traction. Its also nice knowing the carcuss of the Trail is tough. Way more tough than the Sync or Angel. PR2's have a tough carcuss as well but not as tough as the trail is.

That being said, I do not think these tires will shread like the Pirelli Angel did either. I think you could run the Trail bald and still have a good tire as far as structure and durability. I will stick with these for now as well. I should put some hard miles on in a few weeks while out in Co. and Utah. See what a fat ass with a load can do to these at speed.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for these updates, very valuable info!

I have some road smarts on now, and was going to try the pr2's next, but might go with the trails.

I mounted the Trail front tire before starting this trip. We are ridding two up, and heavily loaded, heading to the Canadian Rockies. So far with a 550 miles on the front it looks great and feels great on the road. I'll be changing out the Sync rear for the Trail at the end of this 2k trip. I really like what I see thus far.

Ive got over 5000 miles on the standard 09 XT tyres and still plenty of life in them. Just got back from riding 2500 miles through Spain, the pyrenees and all the way up France. Did france in 1 day, 750 miles, only stopping to get petrol.

David, The Stradas lasted me 8000-8500 miles on the two rears I've run. I've got a set of Shinko Ravens on now and the rear has 6000+ and looks like it's going to beat the Stradas by a good bit unless the second half wears much faster than the first, which is unlikely...

I still have my scorp syncs from NEW. 10,000 Miles+. So far so good. I would say I have abused them moderately but certainly not extremely. It is starting to show a wear pattern down the center of my tire, as I do a significant amount of street riding and so far no off road. Not sure why I am having such luck with the tires, so I may stick with them, unless I can get a better deal on the Trails.

I have been running syncs on the 9sx I just sold for 30k miles and liked them. Know though, that when the tread is gone, that the tire is gone. There isn't much left of the tire that isn't tread, it wont take much of anything to punch a hole in them, one that you aren't going to repair on the road.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are great tires for the 9s bikes. But replace them immediately when they are worn out, and I'm thinking the trail is just the ticket for the Uly...

VERY MILD. I only got 1800 usable miles from my syncs. Pulled the rear off at 1920 miles bald! The carcuss is so thin on a sync its unbelievable! The trails are a HELL of a LOT better and TOUGHER tire then the sync.

The old style Scorpion MT/ 90's were tough like the Trail is and had the same tread pattern as the sync. Never knew why Pirelli stopped making them. The trail is the ticket for me so far and you can plug them.

I pluged a brand new Trail on my V Strom, put a tire on it monday before a trip on Thursday, rode to the HD dealer and bought my Uly the day before the trip and picked up a nail. Less than 30 miles old. Left for the trip and HUH? Pluged it and left, wore the tire out with never a problem from the plug. Rode at SPEED with it pluged many a mile!

I just spent a weekend in N Georgia and Deal's Gap. The Scorpion Trails not only do ok in the dirt, they are FANTASTIC in the corners. I discovered that you can drag Touratech 41 liter panniers. I was straight railing the corners. I had to replace the rear because of cracking. Still need to talk to Onanymoto.com about possible warrenty issues. But love the tire!!! July 4th Killboy.com to see it, bags just above pavement.

Mike, Thanks for the update. I have the scorpion syncs on my Firebolt and have gotten over 5000 out of them. My XT came with Diablo Stratas and I currently have 5000 on them and just returned from a 1700 mile trip. I think one of the keys to getting good mileage is tire pressure. If you keep it in the sweet spot, it will last forever. My mileage decreased as I descended in elevation and tire pressure decreased. Once I aired them up properly, mileage returned. Also had noticeable wear for those periods of under-inflation. Keeping them aired up properly really helps keep them good for miles.

Cheers!
