I lost my nuetral light while riding the newly bought uly and i dont know why. Can anyone help me please

I am pretty sure it has something to do with a bad ground under your seat somewhere? Maybe someone with more experience with the issue will chime in.

ya i rode it to work today and this morning i started it and it was on and when i got to work it would not work. But then on the way home it worked both on start up and on shutdown. So i am at a loss for work on what to do.

I am having the same issue with my '08. The Buell service folks seem to think the problem is a bad sensor. I am still covered under warranty and will get it fixed along with the 5K service. I will report back some time next week.

Jeff, the neutral light is operated by a switch that is located at about 1 o'clock just behind the front pulley. The electrical connector is a push fit so it is easy to pull of and measure the switch.
On my '06 I had a faulty neutral switch quite early in the piece. It had something of a mind of its own for a while and I had no joy in convincing my servicing dealer that it was faulty. The damned thing would always work when the engine was hot and of course after I rode to the dealer ....
If you can catch it when the light doesn't work it is simple to isolate what is going wrong.
Remove the front pulley cover and remove the electrical connector from the neutral switch.
With the ignition on (and in neutral) connect the centre part of the connector to the engine somewhere to ground it. This should turn the neutral light on.
If it doesn't then you might have either a dodgy bulb or wire between where you are holding and the instrument cluster.
If it does come on then the neutral switch is looking guilty. It is a bit of a pain to get to on a Uly as it is partially covered by the front pulley and the belt doesn't help.
If you remove the rear wheel and move the belt out of the way a modified socket (5/8" from memory) can be used to remove and install the switch - both are pictured below.

Jeff- I don't think it's unheard of for these switches to get "sticky" from lack of use. If you bought a left-over bike that's been sitting in a dealer's showroom for a year or two, that may be the problem. I had a Buell S3 before my Uly and it would do that on occasion if I went too long without riding it. The switch would go back to functioning normally after riding the bike for a day or two.

I think I'd ride it for a while and see if it fixes itself. It's not a problem that's going to strand you or anything; it's just an aggravation.

Clean(I was going to say check) the ground under the airbox cover. I had some strange starting problems and neutral light problems before I cleaned mine.

ok ill ride it for a bit and see. If that does not work ill go with rays info. Thank you all very much. I love the bike and just want to ride it but it seem like eveyday there are tornado watchs out and i do want to play with one of those on my bike.

Jeff, I didn't put 2 and 2 together with your statement about 'newly bought Uly' being an old, newly bought Uly. I think Hugh is right on the money with it sticking.
My solution is in the 'worst case scenario' category.
It definitely isn't a show-stopper as I rode with mine bad for months - the clutch switch will override the starter interlock function of the neutral switch and you can go chase tornadoes (are you nuts?).

that was a big do NOT want to play with tornados. Thanks for the info guys it has been workin good for a couple days now so i hope that it fixed itself. If not then ill go to plan B

Jeff, LOL on the tornado chasing - I'm sure you wouldn't want to be within 50 miles of one of those on a bike. Thankfully they are really rare in our neck of the woods.
I would love to get a low miles '06 or '07. My '06 is getting on now but I love it to death. I actually have a new '09 XT as well but prefer riding the '06.
Are you planning to do a lot of the wrenching on this yourself? Happy to write a summary of everything I've ever done to mine in 60,000miles if you want - there are a lot of things you can do now (inexpensive stuff) that will make your '06 very reliable.

well that is the plan but im just riding it right now and reading alot on what i need to do to keep it running good so i can get to that 60000 mile mark. So if you want to write something up i would be glad to know as i am pretty new to the uly. ( I have a 08 firebolt but is a WHOLE different animal IMO)
But man i love that thing its going to be ALOT of fun.

My '08 has a short somewhere in the wiring harness. If I turn my bars all the way right, the neutral light goes out.
When the light is on, try turning your bars back and forth and see if that effects it?
If that's the problem, I'd like to know what the dealer does to fix it, as my
warranty is gone just like Buell........
